Karl Malone defends his use of a flip phone, calls it a 'masterpiece' (Video)

Back in January, during a luncheon prior to a ceremony honoring Jerry Sloan’s work with the Utah Jazz, Karl Malone’s daughter Kylee Malone was kind enough to share a photo of Malone and longtime Jazz teammate John Stockton proudly showing off their George W. Bush Administration-era flip phones:

In attendance for a tough Jazz loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night, Malone spoke with FOX Sports South sideline reporter Andre Aldridge, and defended his use of the technology:

You heard that right.

“This is a masterpiece.”

“Kind of like bell bottoms.”

Though it’s impossible to picture Malone, who notoriously stuck to Alan Jackson-styled skinny jeans during his playing days, in flared trousers, it isn’t tough to figure out why Malone is sticking with the flip phone. It’s the ultimate Dad Device – you take phone calls, you annoy anyone within earspace with your ringtone, you take five minutes to tap out an ultimately inscrutable text message, and you take the odd, poor-resolution photo of something you just hunted in a field and/or stream.

As someone who can’t be bothered to lose his QWERTY keypad on his Blackberry while the daughters swipe away at the touchscreens on their phones … I get it, Karl.

We’re celebrating masterpieces. Kind of like bell bottoms.
