The play took place at the 7:45 mark of the fourth quarter, with the Knicks holding a seven-point lead at Madison Square Garden. As Amundson drove into the paint against the defense of Hornets center Spencer Hawes, Williams sunk down to help and leapt to contest what he assumed was going to be an Amundson layup attempt. When Amundson pump-faked, though, Williams' descent turned into a much more dangerous play:

Williams brought his left elbow down hard on Amundson's forehead, sending him down to the court in a heap and leaving him laying on his back, prompting the Knicks' training staff to come out to attend to him. The referees reviewed the play and elected to slap Williams with a flagrant-2 for "unnecessary and excessive" conduct, earning him an automatic ejection. He finished with two points on 1-for-4 shooting, one rebound, one assist, one steal and one block in 30 minutes of playing time as Charlotte's starting small forward in place of the injured P.J. Hairston.

A towel pressed to his head, Amundson went back to the locker room with the training staff, and was later ruled out for the remainder of the game with a lacerated scalp. He finished with zero points, one rebound and one assist in just under 7 1/2 minutes of playing time.

The NBA on Wednesday announced that Williams had been fined $15,000 for the elbow strike.

The Knicks went on to beat the Hornets, 102-94, behind a monster night from rookie Kristaps Porzingis, who finished with a career-high 29 points and 11 rebounds.
