Is the site of Martin Truex Jr.'s first win going to be his first win of 2015?
If you've been paying attention to the Sprint Cup Series at all in 2015, you know that Martin Truex Jr. has been good. Really good. But you also know that he's currently winless through the season's first 12 races.
Sunday's race is at Dover. Truex won there in 2007, his first of two Sprint Cup Series wins. Is it his next best chance for win No. 3?
“I really enjoy coming here," Truex said Friday. "This is one of my favorite tracks. That is usually a good sign to start off with. Honestly, just between that and the way our cars have been running, the job the team has been doing, I feel like last year we were off quite a bit. We came here and we still ran in the top 10 both races, really had a good run here for us last year. I kind of was looking back at that and thinking about that thinking ‘okay imagine what we can do there now.'"
He finished sixth and seventh at Dover in 2014.
Truex finished last season 24th in the points standings and had one top-five finish and five top-10 finishes. And the 24th was buffered by marked improvement at the end of the season.
This year he has three top-five finishes and 11 top 10s and is second in the standings. Last year, thinking about a second team at Furniture Row -- which has an alliance with Richard Childress Racing and serves as what's essentially a fourth car for RCR -- would have been preposterous with the team's results. Now, not so much.
“Yeah, I don’t think it’s too early to start thinking about it, Truex said. "I think that [team owner Barney Visser] and [general manager Joe Garone] have been thinking about it for a while. It’s just a matter of when is the time right. If the situation and everything works out the way they want it to, the way they want it to look I think it would be a good thing. I really like what we have right now. It’s working well and it’s hard to think about changing something. I think it would be a good thing for the team and certainly they have the capabilities of making it work I believe.”
