Demetrious Johnson still striving for perfection

Despite the fact that Demetrious Johnson is the longest reigning champion in the UFC and ranked as the No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Mighty Mouse feels that he hasn’t quite peaked yet.

And while some fighters aspire to be the greatest pound-for-pound fighter of all time, the UFC flyweight champion would much rather prefer to be remembered as perfect.

“My goal is to be the perfect fighter,” Johnson said in an interview with Sherdog. “Everybody’s opinion changes on the greatest fighter of all time. I want to say that right now the best fighter is Jon Jones. He’s done some amazing things. But then there are some things that I would like to see him do. There are also some things in the Octagon that I want to see myself do that I haven’t been able to do yet.”

Johnson will continue to strive for perfection Saturday when he faces unbeaten Olympic wrestling gold medalist Henry Cejudo at UFC 197. It will be the first time that Johnson has faced someone with the type of wrestling credentials that Cejudo possesses. However, Johnson still comes in as high as a 4 ½-to-1 favorite and is expected to retain his title for the eighth consecutive time.

Even with all of the accolades, Johnson has become a victim of his own greatness. If he gets past Cejudo, he will have effectively cleaned out the division. And with that, the calls of a superfight against bantamweight Dominick Cruz (should he retain his title at UFC 199 against Urijah Faber) would certainly be in order. After all, Johnson’s last loss in the Octagon came against Cruz for the bantamweight championship nearly five years ago. But what will it take for Mighty Mouse to move up?

“Money,” Johnson said.

Johnson seems to be quite comfortable taking on all comers at flyweight and is interested in breaking Anderson Silva’s record of 10 consecutive title defenses.

“Why can’t I get paid more? A goal of mine is to break the title-defense record,” Johnson said. “And I’ve been there [at bantamweight] before. If it’s something I haven’t tried before, I can understand why the public would demand it. But I’ve been a bantamweight and had six fights there before fighting for the title.”
