The Grand Slam: Yankees trounce Red Sox; Dodgers blow it against Phillies

YANKEES TROUNCE RED SOX: On a day where they lost Michael Pineda to a 10-game suspension, then lost Ivan Nova to Tommy John surgery, the New York Yankees at least got one big win. They pummeled the rival Boston Red Sox 14-5 behind a strong outing from C.C. Sabathia and a four-RBI game from Yangervis Solarte.

Sabathia pitched six innings and struck out eight, while a couple familiar Yankee offensive heroes showed up — Mark Teixeira homered and Derek Jeter had a two-run single. Jacoby Ellsbury, the former Red Sox outfielder, had three hits and three RBIs too.

While everything was looking good for the Yanks, it was the opposite for the Red Sox. Starting pitcher Felix Doubront was tagged for seven runs in 2 2/3 innings. After Craig Breslow gave up five runs in the seventh, the Red Sox actually turned to outfielder Mike Carp to pitch the ninth. He walked five batters in his first MLB pitching appearance, but only gave up a run, which all things considered, wasn't too bad. The Red Sox committed five errors too.

The Red Sox are now 10-13 and last in the AL East, while the Yankees lead the division at 13-9.

BRIAN WILSON GIVES IT UP FOR THE DODGERS: Brian Wilson, the $10 million setup man of the Los Angeles Dodgers, hasn't been having the best season thus far. It got much worse Thursday night.

The Dodgers called on Wilson with their game against the Philadelphia Phillies tied 3-3 in the ninth. Six batters and only one out later, Wilson was headed to the showers. The Phillies were up 5-3 after a Carlos Ruiz double, but they tacked on two more, also charged to Wilson, on a Marlon Byrd single off Jamey Wright.

The Phillies won the game 7-3, and Wilson's ERA ballooned to 15.75 after being charged with four runs. Ouch. The win gave the Phillies (11-11) a three-out-of-four series win over the Dodgers.

METS BEAT CARDS AGAIN WITH DICE-K AS THEIR CLOSER: The New York Mets are full of surprises these days. They beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 on Thursday, taking three of four from the defending NL champs and moving into second place in the NL East for the first time this season.

Bartolo Colon pitched seven strong innings of four-hit ball to get the win, but perhaps the bigger story was the Mets turning to Daisuke Matsuzaka as their closer in the ninth. Dice-K retired the side in order, striking out one, and giving the Mets an interesting option to close out games. Kyle Farnsworth is the team's closer currently, their third of this young season. Farnsworth was getting a day off, and Dice-K was getting a look. It was his first MLB save after 123 starts. Maybe we'll see him again?

Curtis Granderson — currently hitting .137 — even got a hit for the Mets. What a day.

A'S TAKE OUT FRUSTRATIONS AGAINST THE ASTROS: After losing three straight to the Texas Rangers, the Oakland Athletics arrived in Houston on Thursday and beat down the Astros by a score of 10-1. Ahhh, nothing like a series against the Astros to get a team back to its winning ways.

Scott Kazmir pitched six innings, striking out seven for the A's, while Josh Donaldson hit two homers and drove in four runs.
