Can Ryan Braun escape another PED story?

More names were promised. We knew they were coming. And on Tuesday, the newest star implicated in the still-unraveling scandal at the Miami-area Biogenesis clinic is Milwaukee Brewers slugger Ryan Braun.

Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown and Jeff Passan broke the news on Tuesday night:

Three records obtained by Yahoo! Sports show Braun's name. He is on a list that includes Alex Rodriguez, Melky Cabrera and Cesar Carrillo, who the Miami New Times reported received PEDs from Bosch. Also on the list are New York Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli and Baltimore Orioles third baseman Danny Valencia.

It matches a document the New Times posted with Braun's name redacted and Cervelli and Valencia's cut off. At least two other documents in the file, given to the New Times by a former Biogenesis employee, mention Braun … Unlike the players named by the New Times, Braun's name is not listed next to any specific PEDs.

As we all know, Braun has had the PED finger pointed at him before. In 2011, not even a month after winning the NL MVP, Braun tested positive for illegal synthetic testosterone.

His 50-game suspension was eventually overturned because of chain-of-custody issues with his urine sample. Ultimately, Braun skated because a FedEx employee didn't deliver his sample quickly enough.

And then — as goes every baseball PED story — Braun loyalists stood steadfast with him as he proclaimed "the truth is on my side." Meanwhile, the "everybody's juicing" crowd pointed at him as just another cheat who didn't get nailed.

What will happen this time around? That's still unclear. Major League Baseball needs to find something more than a name on a list before it can levy another suspension on Braun. But you can bet the league is looking for evidence. The Miami New Times is still considering turning over its Biogenesis documents to MLB officials.

Is there a smoking gun in those files? If so, Ryan Braun might want to start looking around for another fall guy to help him wiggle out of a scandal again.

UPDATE: Braun responds that he only paid clinic owner Anthony Bosch as a consultant in his 2011 drug suspension appeal. "I have nothing to hide," Braun said in a statement released Tuesday night. Full story here.
