Robinson Cano avoids concussion after being hit by errant throw

Talk about a tough weekend for injuries around MLB. Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano became the latest to join the list after being struck on the forehead by an errant throw while the Los Angeles Angels were taking mid-inning infield warmups.

According to reports, Cano was minding his own business standing atop Seattle's first base dugout when the throw nailed him on the left side of his forehead. It's said that Angels first baseman Albert Pujols either lost track of the ball or wasn't expecting the throw, which allowed it to sail unimpeded into Seattle's dugout.

You can clearly make out the reaction of Pujols, who was obviously bothered by what happened. You can also see how far the baseball bounced after striking Cano's head.

Cano was immediately removed from the game. He reported dizziness to the Mariners athletic trainer and was quickly sent for concussion testing. Thankfully, he was cleared.

If Cano was forced to miss time, it would obviously be a big blow to Seattle's lineup. Although he's only hitting .244/.281/.352 with four home runs and 24 RBI this season, he's still a presence in the lineup that's capable of catching fire for extended stretches. Willie Bloomquist, who replaced Cano on Saturday, does not possess those capabilities.

As we noted, this has been a rough weekend in MLB. Early Saturday we learned that Giancarlo Stanton is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a broken hamate bone in his left hand. Andrew McCutchen was also forced from action on Saturday after being hit by a pitch on his left elbow. He's day-to-day. As is Tim Lincecum, who suffered an arm contusion on a line drive comebacker.
