Reds’ rookie pitcher tagged for home run while mom is being interviewed

No one knows how hard players work to get to the big leagues better than the parents. And often parents are even more happy and excited than the players themselves. That was certainly the case Wednesday night when Cincinnati Reds pitcher Michael Lorenzen made his big-league debut.

Lorenzen, a first-round pick in 2013, took the mound against the Milwaukee Brewers and his mom, Cheryl, and brother, Matthew, traveled all the way from California to be there for the game. A beaming Cheryl Lorenzen was interviewed on television in the second inning but the sweet moment was briefly ruined by Brewers first baseman Adam Lind. Lind blasted 1-1 pitch to centerfield for a home run that tied the game 1-1.

Jim Day of Fox Sports Ohio put it best: “Well, that’s welcome to the big leagues, mom.”

But Cheryl, for her part, didn’t miss a beat. She let off a little laugh then went right on boasting about how hard her son worked and how fun the journey has been.

Lorenzen went five innings and gave up three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. He took the loss in an 8-3 Brewers win, but there’s no doubt a homer and a loss did little to dampen Cheryl’s excitement.
