Psychic Brandon Barnes makes absurd leaping catch to prevent homer

Some have jumped higher to rob another of a home run, but few have done so while on the run like outfielder Brandon Barnes did for the Colorado Rockies at Petco Park on Tuesday night. And fewer still can say they called it before it happened.

Barnes's running, leaping catch to keep Rene Rivera of the San Diego Padres in the ballpark highlighted a 3-2 victory for the Rockies. It also showed off Barnes's psychic abilities.

Colorado's had a lousy season (aside from their 16-12 record in April) but this was a fun win, just its 66th overall. The Rox led by a run in the bottom of the eighth when Rivera lined a hanging slider from Luke Ottavino deep to left. Barnes's route was shaped, sort of, like the number seven — back to the fence and then over several feet, jumping and clipping the padding along the way, which made him twirl and fall to all fours on the warning track. Barnes quickly stood up, howled and beat his chest.

He also appeared to talk some smack with the fans in the Petco stands. What was that about?

''One of the guys said, 'He's going to hit a homer here.' And I said, 'I'm going to rob it.' He hit it and I robbed it and that's why I got up and said, 'I told you so.' "

Barnes said he looked at a replay and it appeared that Rivera's ball would have hit the top of the wall and bounced over if he hadn't caught it.

''It's great having Barnes here. He brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to our club,'' manager Walt Weiss said.

You're darned right. Even Rivera, who was remarkably gracious, thinks so.

''He made a great catch, so you have to tip your hat,'' Rivera said. ''That's baseball. I hit it well. I saw it off the bat, it went up and I had good, hard contact. But in Petco sometimes you still have to run hard. He made a great catch.''

And he called his shot. Holy Babe Ruth. The Sultan of Swat is famous for "calling his shot" at the 1933 World Series. It's a dubious, possibly apocryphal story that we hope is true but probably isn't.

This Brandon Barnes catch, while not in the World Series, actually happened with precognition.
