Wake up, Kenley! Padres beat after Cabrera’s steal of home leads to two runs

Kenley Jansen of the Los Angeles Dodgers doesn't have a nickname yet.

"Sandman" might work, thought, because the relief pitcher apparently likes taking naps during the ninth inning. See if you agree after watching this crazy play, which allowed the San Diego Padres to take home a 7-6 victory at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night.

The above video clip doesn't do the play justice — this longer version is better — but Jansen forgetting to call time out and then turning his back on San Diego's Everth Cabrera so he could steal home and score the tying run, would be an all-time brain cramp by itself.

But there was more.Umpire Greg Gibson, also apparently sleepy, inexplicably called Cabrera "out" at the plate, even though catcher A.J. Ellis never had the ball. Gibson corrected himself as he noticed the ball bouncing around behind home plate, but the initial signal gave Jansen pause, so he stopped running toward home (a mistake no matter what), which allowed Will Venable to score the go-ahead run.

Great alertness and hustle on Cabrera's part. Jansen later admitted he had no excuse for falling asleep on the job. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly, seeing no need to punish Jansen any more, basically said it was one of those teachable moments.
