On second valiant attempt, Robbie Ross Jr. catches home run in his hat

Life in the bullpen has its share of perks. In many ballparks, it's one of, if not the best seat in the house, which is pretty neat.

On the other side though, there's not a lot to do in the bullpen. Unless you're preparing to come into the game, interacting with fans or heckling one of your opponents, that life can get boring quickly.

Then again, if you're Boston Red Sox reliever Robbie Ross Jr. and your main goal for the game is to catch a home run in your hat, you have plenty to keep yourself focused and your teammates entertained.

That was definitely Ross's goal on Friday night. During the Red Sox 15-1 blowout victory against the Seattle Mariners, he was bound and determined to catch a home run in his cap and actually pulled it off on his second attempt.

That nifty grab came in the third inning when teammate Travis Shaw launched the first of his two home runs in the game.

Of course, if that was the only clip you saw, you might get the impression that Ross is an expert home run catcher when it comes to using his cap. As you may have already guessed or perhaps seen in the video above, that is not the case. His first attempt did not go well at all, and we apologize to Ross in advance for showing this unfortunate angle.

Wipeout!

That came in the first inning on teammate Rusney Castillo's third home run of the season. The effort was definitely commendable. The execution was something else entirely. He's actually kinda lucky he didn't get hurt, but we're not sure that would have deterred him either way.

All things considered, we'll call it a good night for Ross. Really, just the fact that two of his teammates cooperated by hitting homers into the bullpen is pretty cool. That saved him from running on the field or into the stands to catch a baseball. We don't think he'd do that, but we've learned to never assume anything in baseball.
