Minor league team's special honor for player's cancer-stricken son

Minor league team's special honor for player's cancer-stricken son

When the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers take the field for Super Hero Night on Friday, their jerseys will look a lot different than usual. That's because the team is honoring a super hero within its own family in four-year-old Miles Mortensen.

Mortensen, who's the son of current Omaha reliever and former major leaguer Clayton Mortensen, is currently undergoing treatment following a cancer relapse last month. As a show of support during his courageous fight, the team decided to create a special custom jersey that would be worn in Miles' honor.

The team even included its fans in the process by holding a contest earlier this month. The winning jersey was designed by Nicole Pappas of Boston, and according to Omaha.com will feature players and coaches wearing capes on the back of their jerseys as part of the design.

The white jerseys will feature a large blue “M” for Miles on the front, with the Storm Chasers’ “O-Bolt” logo in yellow directly behind it. Surrounding the “M” and logo on the front are the words “Super Miles” in support of Miles.

The arm sleeves are yellow with the hashtag “#LetsGoMiles” on the left arm. The yellow sleeves symbolize pediatric cancer awareness. The back also features a yellow wind-blown superhero cape behind the Storm Chasers’ jersey numbers.

Yeah, these jerseys are pretty awesome! And that's due in large part to the fact that Miles himself was able to select the winning uniform.

"From the submissions, there were six that he got to pick from, and he picked the one that he thought was the most awesome," Miles' mother, Janna Mortensen, told FOX Sports on Friday. "I think he really likes seeing his name on there. He's really into his name and knowing the letters right now, so he really liked the design of it."

It doesn't get any better than that. Well, until you hear this.

The jerseys will be auctioned off during the Storm Chasers’ game on Friday night, with one-hundred percent of the proceeds benefiting “Let’s Go Miles”. The fundraising total will also be matched one-hundred percent by the Brian Duensing Foundation, which was created by Storm Chasers pitcher Brian Duensing.

This night sounds like a resounding win for everybody involved. We hope those in and around Omaha will support this worthy cause.
