The Juice: Cliff Lee and Matt Cain duel at AT&T, Justin Morneau’s big blasts in the Bronx

Matt Cain and Cliff Lee match zeroes at AT&T: It was old timey baseball night in San Francisco as two pitchers threw a combined 19 scoreless innings in a game that again proved the win-loss stat meaningless. Though Lee pitched 10 innings of shutout baseball and Cain contributed nine, it was Clay Hensley and Antonio Bastardo who got the win/loss box score slots in the Giants' 1-0 victory over Philadelphia in 11 innings on Wednesday night. Melky Cabrera's RBI single off Bastardo ended the night.
Despite the walkoff nature of the win, Lee and Cain's duel is all anyone will be talking about Thursday morning — and rightfully so. According to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki, Lee became just the fourth pitcher to go 10 innings since 2000, joining his teammate Roy Halladay (who did it in Toronto in 2003 and '07), Aaron Harang (2007) and Mark Mulder (2005). He's the first to pitch 10 scoreless innings in a loss since Bret Saberhagen in a Mets' loss to the Padres in 1994.
Lee said he tried lobbying to pitch the 11th — he was still only at 102 pitches — but his idea was nixed. Also, while he was happy to pitch well, Lee lamented the wasted effort.
"I'd rather give up two runs and get the win," Lee told reporters.
Twin killing in the Bronx: An even rarer occurrence took place at Yankee Stadium as the Twins took home a 6-5 victory. Combine that with Minnesota's win on Monday and it marks the first time the Twins have won more than one road game against the Yankees since 2001.
Justin Morneau took two more steps toward returning to his old self, hitting two home runs in a game for the first time since last May. He now has four home runs in 2012, matching the total he posted over 69 games in 2011.
Spoiler alert!: We'll cover both of these games with their own posts, but the Brewers managed their second straight walkoff win with a 3-2 triumph over the Dodgers in 10 innings. Meanwhile, Bartolo Colon threw a mind-boggling 38 consecutive pitches for strikes in a 6-0 win over the Angels.
Rays bats emerge in Toronto: Tampa Bay hit four home runs off Jays pitchers — including three off everyone's favorite fantasy project, the frustrating Brandon Morrow — for a 12-2 blowout at Rogers Centre. Luke Scott punctuated the night with this ninth-inning grand slam off Carlos Villanueva, the third of his career and first since 2010.
