The Juice: Chris Davis hits three homers in O’s, White Sox overcome late meltdown

Davis for three: If Baltimore Orioles outfielder Chris Davis hopes to follow in Adrian Beltre's footsteps, he'll have to hit the cycle in two days. That's because Davis, like Beltre did against his Orioles on Wednesday, connecting for three home runs in a 6-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. That's actually a really cool enough achievement for Davis on its own, but when combined with his unusual pitching win back on May 6, it becomes historic. According to Elias, he's now just the third player to have a three home run and a win as a pitcher in the same season. The other two were Babe Ruth in 1930 and Jim Tobin in 1942.

Wild, wild ninth: Those who like to keep tabs on Hawk Harrelson's mood swings had a field day in the ninth inning. The Chicago White Sox broadcaster watched on, mostly in silence, as their bullpen allowed six runs to the Seattle Mariners and completely blew a 7-2 lead. His despair would be short-lived, however, as the Sox rallied themselves in the bottom and pushed across the winning run on Paul Konerko's long single to center. White Sox take it 8-7. Mercy.

Sabathia's double return: Not only was CC Sabathia making his return from the disabled list, he was also back in Cleveland taking on the Indians. And let's just say the returns went pretty well for the New York Yankees ace, as he was able to hold his original organization to one run over 7 1/3 innings, while striking out nine. That performance, along with Nick Swisher's three RBI night, allowed the Yankees to pull out a 3-1 victory and gives Sabathia his 13th win of the season.

Tempers in check: The St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds managed to play a civil baseball game on Friday night. That might be a bigger story than the Cardinals scoring six runs in the sixth inning to take home a much needed 8-5 victory.

Quote of the Day: ''Congratulations, kiddo. Only 999 more to go!''

That's the message Anthony DeFrancesco had for his son, Houston Astros interim manager Tony DeFranceso, as he rolled into the manager's office in his wheelchair following the Astros 3-1 victory over the New York Mets. The win gives the younger DeFranseco his first win as a big league skipper, and it appears his father won't be satisfied with anything less than 1,000.

Yes, that's David Ortiz squaring around to bunt — and perhaps sacrifice Dustin Pedroia to third — during the Red Sox 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals. Needless to say, it didn't in anything significant for Boston.

Three Facts for the Water Cooler:

• Due to a very strange schedule quirk, the Milwaukee Brewers didn't make their first trip to Pittsburgh to take on the division rival Pirates until Friday night. Apparently it was worth the wait, as the Brew Crew played spoiler with a 6-5 win.

• The Los Angeles Dodgers may be gaining some high-priced reinforcements soon, but lost Chad Billingsley to a tender elbow in their 11-4 win over the Miami Marlins.

• Zack Greinke tossed 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball in the Angels 2-1 victory over the Tigers, earning his first victory since being shipped to Los Angeles on July 27 in the process.
