Jon Lester tosses entire glove to first base to record an out

Yasiel Puig has the bat flip. Bryce Harper has the hair flip. And now Chicago Cubs left-hander Jon Lester has the "baseball's stuck in the webbing, so here comes the whole glove" flip.

During Sunday's afternoon game at Wrigley Field, Lester was forced to get creative when Clint Barmes' ground ball got wedged in the webbing of his glove. Rather than panic, though, Lester jogged several steps toward first base before tossing his entire glove to first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

It's a play that's happened a few times before in baseball, but it never gets old watching the process unfold. There's that moment when the fielder, usually a pitcher, first realizes his predicament. There's the quick dash toward first base. Then there's the flip itself, which always looks like a disaster waiting to happen but never is.

Let's give a nod to Rizzo as well for ditching his glove to catch the incoming glove. Gloves are designed to catch baseballs, not other gloves, so it was smart  to free up both hands.

It's also quite interesting and a bit fitting that Lester was involved in a play such as this.

As you know, when a pitcher commands $155 million over six years on the open market, it's OK to assume he'll be able to get the ball to first base without incident. Unfortunately, that isn't always the case with Lester, as he's been diagnosed with a case of the "yips" on his pickoff attempts over the past few seasons. Actually, it's to the point where holding baserunners is barely an option for him.

That he could navigate these tricky waters is encouraging. But we also must remember  he's done similarly creative work with the glove in the past, which didn't help his overall cause.

He's a pitcher, so obviously he has to keep his left hand free. Otherwise, we might suggest Lester wear gloves on both hands.

As for his overall performance on Sunday, Lester allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings. He fell to 0-2 as the Cubs dropped the game 5-2 to the Padres.
