Everyone laugh! Big Papi interrupts Jake Peavy's World Series press conference

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Press conferences in Major League Baseball can be informative and fun. They also can be, well — just bang your head lightly against the nearest table. They can be like that, too.

Taking no chances Tuesday afternoon at a World Series press conference where Jake Peavy was speaking, David Ortiz entered a room of sports reporters about seven questions in so he could say hello to a former teammate. Sure, he could have waited to say hi on the field or in the dugout or clubhouse before Game 1, but it's always better to do what you do best.

In the case of Ortiz, that's making an entrance. He's at the World Series to provide analysis on Fox. Ortiz was said to be nervous about his TV gig, thinking he might not measure up to the job that another former teammate, Pedro Martinez, did for TBS in the earlier rounds of the postseason.

All he has to do is be himself and, though some won't like him because they've grown tired of the Red Sox (too bad), most of the viewers will give him a chance to add something to the broadcast.

Ortiz seemed to pass his final test:

'Come on wit' it, big man!'
'Come on wit' it, big man!'

Peavy and Ortiz didn't play long together, but they were on the World Series champs from 2014.

"Come on wit' it, big man," Peavy said as a Cheshire grin came over his face upon seeing Ortiz.

"I'm on the dark side now," Ortiz said .

"You ain't never on my dark side," Peavy responded.

"Get a room, you two," everyone was thinking.

"I'm sorry, boys," Peavy said, getting up from his seat (and forgetting that women cover baseball, too ... hello?) before going to Papi for a manly and loving embrace. They slapped hands, making a sound like a little thunder clap. It also brought to mind a famous handshake from the movies, a clip of which has NSFW language:

Peavy's eyes admired Papi's look, Papi said something about how he was following Peavy's example. They continued to exchange pleasantries for a nanosecond and Papi told Peavy to, "Go do your thing," meaning get back to the press conference, the theme of which had been Peavy's scheduled start in Game 2 on Wednesday.

Here's how the aftermath was recorded by the transcriber:

Q: What's it like to have David Ortiz walk into the interview room?

JAKE PEAVY: My man right there is special. I've been telling everybody how special Pablo Sandoval is. That man who just walked in the building is a special talent, y'all. He's unlike anybody I've ever played with in the game and impacts the game. Only to be on one side of the ball, for the most part, is pretty incredible.

But I think we all know what David Ortiz is, who he is, but people don't know what kind of teammate and what kind of man he is. I think you guys just saw how genuine. I haven't seen him since I got traded. Yeah, that was the thrill of the press conference so far (laughing).

Everyone laugh! It was kind of funny, and much better than banging one's head against a desk, even lightly.
