End of the Road 2015: New York Yankees

After losing Tuesday's AL wild-card game to the Houston Astros, the New York Yankees have been eliminated from the MLB postseason. That means they've effectively come to the end of the road in their 2015 season. As we'll do with each eliminated team this season, let's give them a send-off that would make Boyz II Men proud.

We'll look at the highs and lows of their season, what bright spots their future might hold and what questions need answering as they prepare for 2016.

HIGH POINT: For a playoff team, the Yankees alternated a lot between hot and cold. Especially offensively. During a stretch in late July into August, they scored 90 runs in a span of 10 games. They immediately followed by scoring nine total runs in their next seven games. The month of July was by far their high point. They went 17-7 that month to firmly establish themselves in the postseason hunt. Officially clinching their wild card berth on Oct. 1 against the Red Sox was another high.

LOW POINT: Oh those streaky Yankees. Every time it looked like they'd take control of the AL East or at least the wild card, here would come one of those cold streaks. In mid-May, they lost nine of 10 to fall out of first place. In late June, they lost seven of ten, falling to third place. In early August, they lost six of seven. That's exactly how they entered the postseason, too, losing six of seven, before Dallas Keuchel shredded them and sent them packing. With a little more consistency, and a lot less injuries to key offensive players, they might still be alive.

BEST HIGHLIGHT: You have to tip your cap to Alex Rodriguez. Even the most optimistic of his supporters could not have envisioned a better comeback season. A-Rod finished the season with a .250/.356.486 batting line to go along with 33 home runs and 86 RBIs. Milestones fell as well, as A-Rod tied and passed Willie Mays on the all-time list and reached 3,000 hits. Either one could be the top highlight.

HOPE FOR THE FUTURE: You have to start with the dominant bullpen. The Yankees will return Andrew Miller, Dellin Betances, Justin Wilson and Chasen Shreve, keeping the core intact. They shorten the game and always give New York a chance to be competitive. If they can keep important core guys like Mark Teixeira, Jacoby Ellsbury and Masahiro Tanaka healthy, to go along with Rodriguez, Brett Gardner, Chase Headley and the emerging Greg Bird, they'll be in the mix.

QUESTION THAT NEEDS ANSWERING: Will the Yankees target a top flight starter in free agency? The Yankees have their entire staff under control for next season, but could really use a second stud to team with Tanaka. There's also always concern with Tanaka's elbow, so it would also be insurance. There will be several tantalizing options available, including David Price and Jordan Zimmermann. We'll see if they're willing to spend.
