Dee Gordon to miss All-Star game after dislocating thumb

Talk about bittersweet.

The Miami Marlins offense broke loose on Saturday, helping them notch a lopsided 14-3 victory against the Cincinnati Reds. Unfortunately, in the midst of it all, All-Star second baseman Dee Gordon was lost after dislocating his thumb on a head-first slide into first base.

Gordon was injured during Miami's eight-run seventh-inning rally. In fact, Gordon was the first of nine straight Marlins batters to reach via basehits in the inning, but it was definitely costly as his awkward slide put his unprotected thumb in a vulnerable position.

You could almost see the regret on Gordon's face when he got back to his feet. His frustration was even more clear in the moments that followed. After walking off the field with Miami's athletic trainer, he slammed his helmet in the dugout before heading to the clubhouse.

If there's a silver lining, it's that early reports indicate Gordon avoided significant damage to his thumb. In fact, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, Gordon may only miss two weeks as a result.

That's actually good news long term. Unfortunately though, Gordon will not have enough time to recover for Tuesday's All-Star game in Cincinnati, which would have been his first.

Gordon, who leads the Majors with 122 hits, the most ever by a Marlin before the All-Star break, was voted as the National League's starting second baseman. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Colorado's D.J. LeMahieu. The Rockies will also get a third infielder in the All-Star game, as Troy Tulowitzki was named as Gordon's roster replacement. Nolan Arenado was voted in by the players.

The injury continues what has been a rough season for Miami. They're already without right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, who is out through July with a broken hamate bone in his left hand. Like Gordon, Stanton was voted in as an All-Star starter, but will only be a spectator.
