David Ortiz suspended one game by MLB after bumping ump, will appeal

Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, always a man with an opinion, was suspended one game by MLB on Tuesday. It's only one game, but Ortiz isn't being quiet and taking it. He's appealing.

Ortiz was ejected from Sunday's game after arguing a check-swing that was called a strike. While he fumed about that, Ortiz bumped umpire John Tumpane. That's a no-no and MLB popped Papi for it.

From the league office:

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for making contact with Umpire John Tumpane during the bottom of the fifth inning of the Club’s Sunday, April 19th game against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park.  Joe Garagiola, Jr., Senior Vice President of Standards & On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.

We figured it was only a matter of time before Ortiz got fined this season, though we expected it would be for pace-of-play violations, since he's already objected to MLB's new batter's box rules. Those fines won't come until May, but Ortiz's checkbook will be getting a warm-up before that.
