Daniel Norris makes leaping catch on bunt in impressive Tigers debut

Daniel Norris went all out to impress in his debut with the Detroit Tigers.

The 22-year-old left-hander, acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays as the key piece for David Price, made his first start for Detroit on Sunday and put together a stirring performance.

A solo home run by Chris Davis in the fourth inning was the only run Norris allowed over 7 1/3 innings in a 6-1 Tigers win. He gave up four hits, struck out five and walked just one.

On top of pitching a great game, Norris also showed he may have a Gold Glove in his future as well.

In the bottom of the second, Norris was in a bit of a jam. The Orioles had runners on first and second and Norris had yet to record an out in the inning. Baltimore's J.J. Hardy attempted to bunt the runners over, but he didn't make good contact and popped it up halfway between the plate and the mound on the first base side.

Norris came flying off the mound and caught the ball at full-stretch in a splendid display of athleticism. After dusting himself off, he got Jimmy Paredes to ground into an inning-ending double-play. That's some poise right there.

Norris told reporters after the game he was pleased with how his Detroit debut played out:

''You always want to make a good impression. If you go out there and try to do too much the wheels can fall off rather quickly. I thought I did a fine job of staying within myself and pitching my game."

It's just one start, but a few more outings like that and it won't be long before Norris is known just as much for his pitching ability as he is for living in a 1978 Volkswagen van for parts of the offseason.
