D-backs announcers mock sorority girls for taking too many selfies

Let's say this first: There's nothing wrong with going to a baseball game and taking a selfie. Or two. Heck, even three or four. But spending too much time staring into your phone at an MLB game could have some less-than-wonderful consequences.

We're not just talking about safety either. A mascot might scare the daylights out of you with a fake spider, for example. Or, as we saw during Wednesday's night's Arizona Diamondbacks game, the TV announcers could put you on display as Exhibit One of everything that's wrong with the selfie generation.

This group of sorority girls from Arizona State did go selfie crazy — posing with each other, posing with hot dogs, posing with churros. And announcers Steve Berthiaume and Bob Brenly spent about two minutes mocking them for it. We're talking pitch-by-pitch commentary. (That's also a product of the D-backs and their opponents, the Colorado Rockies, playing a meaningless game).

"The beauty of baseball is, you can sit next to your neighbor and have a conversation," Berthiaume said at one point. "Or you can just completely ignore them."

As social commentary goes, Berthiaume and Brenley have a point. We as a modern people do spend too much time looking at our phones. But some folks think they went too far by making fun of fans — especially younger, female fans — at the game. TMZ called it selfie shaming, which we never knew was a thing until now.

Nonetheless, the girls' sorority — Alpha Chi Omega — seemed to happily enjoy the attention on Twitter:

We suppose that's the point of the selfie, right? You want people to look at you. Even if sometimes they're mocking you.
