Yankees GM says Derek Jeter should be team's last captain

You'll hear this many, many times during the 2015 season, but it's important here: There's no replacing Derek Jeter. Not in the hearts of New York Yankees fans. Not at shortstop. And not as the team's captain.

Well, about that last one, that's what Yanks GM Brian Cashman believes. He said Thursday that the team should never have another captain. Cashman believes now that Jeter is retired, so too should be the role of Yankees captain.

You mean they're not giving it to A-Rod?!? We were really looking forward to that press conference.

Anyhow, here's what Cashman had to say about Captain Fo2ever Derek Jeter on the Mike Lupica Show, via the New York Daily News:

“As far as I’m concerned, and I’m not the decision-maker on this, that captaincy should be retired with No. 2," Cashman said. "I wouldn’t give up another captain’s title to anyone else."

The Yankees GM said making that a reality would be the owner’s call, not his, adding that Jeter was “so perfect” for the role.

"Leadership comes in a lot of forms, it would be a hard one to anoint someone captain," Cashman continued, "regardless of how great they might be."

Jeter was the team's longest-tenured captain, wearing the title from 2003 until the end of last season. The Yankees went eight years without a captain before that, as Don Mattingly was anointed from 1991-95.

Given that the Yankees haven't felt obligated in the past to have a captain every year, it makes total sense to let the title stay dormant a while, especially as the romanticizing of Jeter carries into 2015. Nevermind that the Yankees' Twitter account was already calling a minor-leaguer "Jeteresque" after a nice play at shortstop Wednesday.

There's no replacing Derek Jeter.
