ALDS Game 1: Rangers bats get to Blue Jays ace David Price in 5-3 win

The Toronto Blue Jays aren't unstoppable. Given the team's dominant offense, and the fact that David Price was on the mound, many thought the club had Game 1 wrapped up. That wasn't the case. The Texas Rangers got  to Price during the team's 5-3 victory against the Blue Jays on Thursday. Rougned Odor and Robinson Chirinos added home runs off the lefty, while Adrian Beltre tagged Price for an RBI hit before leaving the game with a back injury. The Blue Jays' bats showed some signs of life late, but were ultimately shut down by the Rangers' bullpen.

• Robinson Chirinos had the biggest hit of the night, smacking a two-run shot off Price in the fifth inning. With the Rangers leading 2-1, Chirinos stepped to the plate with a man on first and a chance to break things open. He did not disappoint. On the second pitch of the at-bat, Chirinos hit a 94-mph fastball out to left center, giving the club a 4-1 lead. It was Chirinos' only hit of the game.

• Rougned Odor also had just one hit, but he found other ways to contribute. Odor reached base three times, getting hit by two pitches during the game. He was on base when Chirinos launched his two-run shot and also scored on a Delino DeShields single in the third. He must have been pretty mad at those baseballs, because Odor launched a solo shot against Price in the seventh inning. He finished 1 for 2 with three runs scored and one RBI.

• Adrian Beltre had only two plate appearances before leaving the game with a back injury, but he made them count. Beltre knocked an RBI single in the third inning even though he appeared to be in immense pain as he attempted to run down to first base. Beltre reportedly injured himself during a first inning slide, so it was amazing he stayed in the game to hit, let alone deliver a huge hit. Beltre was removed shortly after picking up the RBI single.

• It was a tough one for Justin Smoak. The 28-year-old went hitless at the plate, striking out twice. One of those punch outs came in a huge moment. With the Blue Jays down 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Smoak stepped to the plate with two outs and men on first and third. The team had managed a rally against Yovani Gallardo at that point, and the veteran pitcher was starting to look vulnerable. Turns out, Gallardo had the perfect strategy against Smoak. Smoak did not see a fastball during the at-bat, eventually striking out on an 82 mph curve. It was one of the biggest moments for Toronto at the plate, and Smoak couldn't come through.

• Troy Tulowitzki didn't have a particularly productive outing. The shortstop, playing through injury, went hitless in four at-bats, including a groundout, two fly outs and a strikeout. He stranded three runners.

The Smoak at-bat in the fourth inning stands out. It was the one point in the game where the Blue Jays finally looked like they had conquered Gallardo. With a chance to break things open, or extend the inning, Smoak struck out with two men on base.

After 1,403 regular season games without a playoff appearance, Jose Bautista finally appeared in a postseason game. In the sixth inning, he added his first postseason home run. Bautista smashed a no-doubt solo shot against Keone Kela to cut the lead to 4-3. Considering everything that happened after that (which we'll get to in a minute), it was a nice moment for Bautista and Jays' fans.

Hitting a home run against Kela hasn't been easy this season, either.

Unfortunately, it's going to be the injuries. The Rangers lost Adrian Beltre to a lower back issue, and it did not look good. Beltre is known for playing through anything, so the fact that he left the game in intense pain does not bode well moving forward.

On top of that, the Blue Jays lost Josh Donaldson after he was hit in the head by Rougned Odor's knee during a slide. The team took him out for "precautionary reasons," and he was evaluated for a concussion. Donaldson reportedly passed concussion protocol, and should be back in the lineup for the next game.

Later in the contest, Jose Bautista left with a mild hamstring injury. Both players are expected to play Friday, according to Ken Rosenthal.

The two teams will square off in Game 2 on Friday. The game will take place at 12:30 p.m. ET on MLB Network. Cole Hamels (13-8, 3.65) will take on Marcus Stroman (4-0, 1.67) in Toronto. The Blue Jays will be looking to even the series.
