Windsor Spitfires’ Jaroslav Pavelka has 38-save shutout, snapping 7-game skid: Thursday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Jaroslav Pavelka, Windsor Spitfires (OHL)

Pavelka stayed on his toes, making 38 saves to help the overhauled Spitfires beat Brampton 3-0 to end their seven-game losing streak. The 19-year-old goalie gave Windsor an early confidence boost with a pad save in the opening minute and made numerous saves where he had to shift his weight after a Battalion deflection. He also withstood a late Battalion push for a goal to earn his first shutout of the season.

No. 2 star: Josh Currie, P.E.I. Rocket (QMJHL)

The Q's leading scorer got the nick of time award, getting two first-period goals to launch the Rocket to a 5-2 home win over the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. After opening the scoring with a short-handed goal off a setup from Derrick Ottereyes, Currie (2G, +1) put B-B even farther behind the 8-ball by sniping a goal with one second left in the first period. By the time the Armada could locate the rudder, it was the middle of the second and the P.E.I. had doubled the margin to four goals. The effort helped Currie become the Q's first 35-goal man.

No. 3 star: Dylan DeMelo, Mississauga Steelheads (OHL)

DeMelo (3G-1A, -2) helped the Steelheads earn a point in the standings, although the Barrie Colts prevailed 5-4 in a shootout in Mark Scheifele's potential last OHL home game. The overage defenceman scored twice on well-placed point shots and also snuck down from the point late in the second period to score from a tight angle, giving the Fish a one-goal lead on the road entering the final 20 minutes. However, Barrie could not be denied on a big night for their Winnipeg Jets-bound star, who scored in the second period. Barrie captain Ryan O'Connor levelled with fewer than seven minutes to go in regulation, priming the Barrie Molson Centre crowd for Steven Beyers to end the night with a shot that squirted through 'Sauga goalie Spencer Martin's pads.

Honourable mention: Laurent Dauphin, Chicoutimi Saguenéens (QMJHL)

The 17-year-old continued his excellent rookie season with a first-star effort in the Sags' 4-1 spanking of the Quebec Remparts. Dauphin (1G-1A, +1), who has 40 points in 37 games, put Chicoutimi ahead for good midway through the second. With fewer than six minutes to play, he collaborated on the coup de grace by setting up Sébastien Sylvestre (1G-1A, +1) for a power-play goal. Chicoutimi iced its fourth win in a row by scoring again fewer than 90 seconds later.

Honourable mention: Andrew D'Agostini, Peterborough Petes (OHL)

D'Agostini stopped 36-of-38 shots and then stoned four shootout tries, helping the Petes top the Kitchener Rangers 3-2. The 19-year-old goalie capped off the night with a stop on Kitchener's last would-be shootout savant, Derek Schoenmakers, who refused to report to Peterborough after a trade from Windsor earlier in the season. Former Ranger Nick Czinder also scored in his first game for the Petes.

(Former Pete Matt Puempel was out with a shoulder injury for the Rangers, who were also minus world junior players John Gibson, Radek Faksa and Ryan Murphy.)

Potent notables — Windsor rookie Ryan Verbeek scored his first OHL goal. Boston Bruins prospect Alex Khokhlachev had one assist in his return to the Spitfires from the KHL ... Dallas Stars prospect Brett Ritchie had a short-handed goal for Niagara in his last game before leaving for the NHL team's training camp.
