No. 1 star: Jaedon Descheneau, Kootenay Ice (WHL)

Descheneau is free from prospect purgatory now that he is a St. Louis Blues draft pick, but is now manacled to the burden of carrying an Ice team that is carrying on without Sam Reinhart, without Toronto Maple Leafs-drafted defenceman Rinat Valiev and without its best power winger, John Martin. Descheneau (3G-1A, +3) did everything he could on Wednesday, scoring on a solo effort and setting up Levi Cable (1G-1A) for tying goal in the third period before the Regina Pats prevailed 5-4.

The Ice, which has just two wins in its first six games, allowed 47 shots and faced three 5-on-3 penalty kills on the night, weathering two. All that extra PK time in the second period seemed to catch up to it when Regina scored twice in the first 1:15 in the third. However, the 19-year-old Descheneau completed his sixth career hat trick by pulling past a checker at the Pats blueline and scoring with 15:08 left into the third to pare Regina's edge to 4-3. He then set up Cable in the slot for the tying goal with 4:08 to play.

Adam Brooks
' second of the night on a shot that went in off the goalpost with 1:52 remaining gave the Pats the win.

No. 2 star: Tim Wieser, Sherbrooke Phoenix (QMJHL)

Sherbrooke's Swiss sensations struck again, with Wieser (2G, +1), scoring his second of the night off a setup from Kay Schweri (1A, +2) with one second left to down Cape Breton 4-3. The line of the two imports and wing Vincent Deslauriers has combined for 47 points through the first 10 games of the season.

Wieser a 19-year-old from Zurich, opened the scoring in the first period off a setup from Deslauriers (2A, +2) as the Phoenix set out to make a statement vs. Maritimes Division-leading Screaming Eagles. Cape Breton made a two-goal rally in the third before Wieser wired in the winner. It was his 11th goal of the season, only four fewer than his output all of last season.

No. 3 star: Alex Dubeau, Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL)

The overage goalie made 25 saves to help the 'Cats get the first point, then stopped all three shootout tries to get it the second with a 2-1 decision over the red-hot Gatineau Olympiques. Dubeau's best stop of the night was probably a glove stop on rookie Pascal Laberge in the second period  that kept Gatineau from opening a two-goal lead.

Moncton conjured up a tying goal with 13:03 left in the third and Vladimir Tkachev got the only conversion of the shootout.

Honourable mention: Jari Erricson, Prince George Cougars (WHL)

The Cougars' overage who missed nearly all of last season due to injury nearly netted his first hat trick during a 6-2 home romp over winless Lethbridge. Erricson (2G-2A, +3) missed an empty-net goal with three minutes left after a setup from linemate Chase Witala (1G-2A, +2).

The Prince George native scored the first goal of each of the first two periods, had a short-handed assist and also had a helper on a Witala marker in the final minute of the second. Erricson and Witala's centre, Jansen Harkins (3A, +3), chipped in to give the line a 10-point night.

Honourable mention: Brett Gustavsen, Belleville Bulls (OHL)

Gustavsen (2G), the Bulls' overage wing, continued to make the most of his chance to be an primary offensive player. The 20-year-old winger scored power-play goals midway through the second and 5 1/2 minutes into the third to help the Bulls pull away for a 4-1 win over the Plymouth Whalers, who got a 50-save effort from backup goalie Zack Bowman.

Belleville's other two salvos came from two first-time scorers, 16-year-old centre Brandon Saigeon and 17-year-old wing Matt Luff.

Potent notables — Sault Ste. Marie's Médric Mercier scored his first OHL goal during the Greyhounds' 6-1 win over Sudbury ... Cape Breton's Kyle Farrell scored his QMJHL-leading 12th goal ... Drummondville's Justin Doucet, a 6-foot-5 rookie wing, scored his first career goal during a 3-1 win over Victoriaville.
