Watch Kingston Frontenacs’ Michael Moffat throw perfect, clean check on Oshawa Generals’ Hunter Smith (VIDEO)

The Hunter became the hunted on Sunday, in one the most devastating yet totally clean checks delivered so far this season in the Ontario Hockey League.

Normally a heavy collision in the OHL sparks up a parlour game about whether there was a check to the head and how long the player might be suspended. Since Oshawa Generals right wing Hunter Smith is one of the league's tallest players at 6-foot-6, it might be almost impossible to head check him. On Sunday, Kingston Frontenacs captain Michael Moffat lined up Smith perfectly with a shoulder-to-chest check just inside the blueline.

The 20-year-old Moffat, who is 6-foot-1 and 220, nearly put Smith into the General Motors Centre rafters. The impact was so great that the General's helmet popped right off of his head. The frame-by-frame shows how Moffat's check was as perfectly timed as it was perfectly clean.

The game was in Oshawa, so let's take that as an explanation for why Moffat did not receive Three Stars recognition just for that hit alone. The Waterloo, Ont., native got a long look from the Nashville Predators at training camp this fall, getting into an AHL exhibition game. That was a man-sized check, for sure.

Kingston won 2-1 to retake third place in the OHL's Eastern Conference, 10 points behind first-place Oshawa.

Incidentally, Hunter Smith is an intriguing player to keep an eye on as a possible re-entry candidate for the 2014 NHL draft. With a Sept. 11, 1995, birthdate, he only made the age cutoff for last summer's draft by four days; point being, he might be looked at differently if he was merely a week younger. The Windsor, Ont., native has eight goals and 20 points in 26 games for the thriving Generals. With Smith's size and modicum of scoring ability, some team might take a shine to him, much like how 6-foot-7 Guelph Storm forward Justin Auger was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings last summer.

Getting caught in the figurative trolley tracks was probably not the best way to get scouts' attention, though.
