VIDEO: Owen Sound’s Brayden Rose ejected for Category II Physical Abuse of Official

In a weird weekend punctuated by a goalie fight, Owen Sound Attack defenceman Brayden Rose got hit Saturday night with a rare "Abuse of Official" penalty. Rose got involved in a scrum with Guelph's Tyler Bertuzzi during a scrum at the end of a 5-0 blowout for the Storm. Restrained by OHL referee Sean Reid, the two exchanged short jabs, caught on video by a fan sitting right behind the glass next to the action.

Here's OHL rule 40.3, Category II abuse of officials:

40.3 Automatic Suspension – Category II - Any player who deliberately applies physical force to an official in any manner (excluding actions as set out in Category I), which physical force is applied without intent to injure, or who spits on an official, shall be automatically suspendedfor not less than ten (10) games.

You may recall Jonathan Huberdeau was suspended four games for a similar infraction back in December. His transgressions were considered a Category III, where he took down the linesman in an effort to get free. You can see Rose and Reid both take short jabs at each other at about the :31 second mark of this video, as Bertuzzi continues to jaw at Rose:

Surprisingly, there weren't too many penalties dished out. You can see Attack goaltender Jordan Binnington and teammate Holdon Cook attempt to wrestle down Cody McNaughton right at the start of the video, but neither of them were penalized on the play. There are a few other scrum pairings, but, according to the box score, no punches thrown as no player was penalized for a fighting major on this play.

Rose is a '93-born defenceman from Richmond Hill who is playing his third year with the Attack. He's undrafted by NHL teams. While the Attack are one of the top teams in the OHL in fighting majors, Rose has just three all season. The league hasn't formally announced a suspension yet (they typically announce penalties for serious infractions late in the afternoon) but it's safe to say that Rose will miss a minimum of ten games.
