No. 1 star: Mason Geertsen, Vancouver Giants (WHL)

The Giants' seasoned defenceman sent a school-day game crowd of 10,161 home happy by scoring with 49 seconds left in overtime for a 3-2 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors. Geertsen (2G-1A, +2) got his career high-tying third point by picking his spot perfectly during the 4-on-4 session, as he moved into the slot and converted on a pass from Tyler Benson (3A, +2).

The 19-year-old Colorado Avalanche draft pick also had two points during the second period. Geertsen drew a helper on a Thomas Foster power-play goal, then scored in the final half-minute of the frame on a slapshot from the top of the faceoff circle.

Geertsen has 11 goals on the campaign, but has scored twice in a game three times. His offensive outbursts just seem to pop up, not unlike the 6,000-student strong anti-bullying flash mob during Wednesday's game.

No. 2 star: Sonny Milano, Plymouth Whalers (OHL)

Milano (1G-1A) had two third-period points to help the Whalers win 3-1 in their final visit to rival Windsor before moving to Flint. The front end of the home-and-home between the border rivals, who convene for the last time on Friday in Plymouth, was deadlocked with 9:25 left when Milano took a pass from defenceman Mathieu Henderson (2A, +1), carried into the Spitfires zone and flipped the puck over a sliding defenceman to rookie Will Bitten, who rapped in the winning goal. With 4:07 to play, Milano cashed in on a power play to put the game out of reach.

Carolina Hurricanes draft pick Alex Nedeljkovic had 42 saves and set up the first Whalers goal with a breakaway pass to Connor Chatham. Since Carolina owner and former Plymouth owner Peter Karmanos was in the crowd, Nedeljkovic was playing in front of his former and future boss simultaneously.

No. 3 star: Carl Marois, Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL)

Marois (1G-1A, +3) scored 2:06 into overtime to give the Tigres a badly needed 4-3 road win over the Saint John Sea Dogs. The 19-year-old wing wired a shot off the right post and under the cross bar for the decider. That gave the Tigres, who were in a 1-4-0-0 funk, two big points to start a three-game trip through the Maritimes.

The 19-year-old wing also had an assist in the second period on rookie defenceman Jake Barter's first Quebec League goal.

Honourable mention: Riley Sheen, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)

The overage helped the Rebels get traction during an eventual 4-3 road win against the Saskatoon Blades that snapped a four-game losing streak. Sheen (1G-1A) was named first star inside the Credit Union Centre after scoring early in the second period and earning an assist on defenceman Josh Mahura's tying goal with 6:04 left in the third. That goal, which was the 16-year-old Mahura's first in the Dub, staggered Saskatoon significantly. Presten Kopeck (1G-1A, +2) bagged the winner just 85 seconds later.

Potent notables — San Jose Sharks selection Rourke Chartier moved into a tie for the WHL goal lead, scoring his 45th and 46th during the Kelowna Rockets' 11-4 win against the Kamloops Blazers. Rockets defenceman Lucas Johansen also scored his first WHL goal ... Buffalo Sabres prospect Justin Bailey (2G-1A, +2) got his 34th during Sault Ste. Marie's blowout against Sudbury.
