Val-d’Or Foreurs’ Anthony Mantha has 4-goal game: Wednesday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Anthony Mantha, Val-d'Or Foreurs (QMJHL)

The 18-year-old centre was half Mantha, half machine while scoring four goals and one assist in the Foreurs' 5-4 overtime win over the Rimouski Océanic to pull into a tie for the lead in the Quebec League scoring race. Considering that he'd already had two hat tricks in his first 13 games, this is hardly anything new of late from Mantha. He has 14 goals and 22 points during his nine-game point streak that has further catapulted him on to the NHL draft radar.

With Montreal Canadiens director of amateur scouting Trevor Timmins looking on at Centre Air Creebec, Mantha scored twice in the opening 40 minutes to stake Val-d'Or to a 3-2 lead. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Longueuil, Que., native, who was in sync with Pittsburgh Penguins sixth-rounder Anton Zlobin (3A, +1) all night, scored a go-ahead goal in the third and his OT winner averted disappointment for Val-d'Or, which had given up the equalizer with nine seconds left.

Mantha, whose birthday fell one day too late for him to be eligible for last summer's NHL draft, is a late 1994 and he has also has a hard-to-sustain 23.8 per cent shooting percentage. It's important to keep the enthusiasm about him tempere, but this five-point night fits in with the torrid point production he's put up this calendar year. Jérôme Bérubé noted Mantha has 34 goals and 68 points in his last 35 games. Fellow draft-eligible forward Frédérik Gauthier tallied once for the Océanic.

No. 2 star: Jonathan Drouin, Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)

The 17-year-old Drouin (2G-2A, +3) was the game's first star in his return from missing six games with an upper-body injury, as he helped Halifax drop Drummondville 6-2. It was the Mooseheads' 11th consecutive win, so one might joke they missed Drouin the same way Peter Gibbons missed working at Initech in Office Space, but surely all involved were grateful to see him back, because of the way he was producing before getting hurt. Drouin started fast by assisting on an opening tally by fellow 17-year-old Nathan MacKinnon (2G, +3), scored later in Period 1 to put Halifax ahead for good and also salted away the win with a third-period short-handed goal.

No. 3 star: Cam Lanigan, Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL)

The overage goalie, who stopped 55-of-58 shots and denied two shootout attempts, double-earned his first win for the Tigers. The Kelowna Rockets hemmed Medicine Hat in its own zone nearly all night with their unyielding forechecking, but the 20-year-old Lanigan stole the game for a 4-3 extra-time win. The Calgary native had a 19-save first period and an 18-save third, which ended in disappointment for the Tigers when Kelowna's Zach Franko (1G-1A) tied the game with 24 seconds remaining. However, Lanigan robbed Rockets captain Colton Sissons late in overtime to take the game to a shootout, where he stopped Franko and Myles Bell while his teammates went 2-for-3.

Honourable mention: Teagan Sacher, Regina Pats (WHL)

Sacher, 17, recorded his first shutout in the Dub by handling 28 shots in the Pats' 3-0 win over the Kootenay Ice. The graduate of the Winnipeg Thrashers AAA midget team, who has lent the Pats a capable backup to spell overage Matt Hewitt, had his busiest period in the second when he made 12 of his saves. The Pats, who mustered only 17 shots on the entire night, got two goals from overager Lane Scheidl.

Honourable mention: Troy Bourke, Prince George Cougars (WHL)

Bourke (2A, +2), a Colorado Avalanche third-rounder, was Prince George's facilitator on offence as they doubled the Spokane Chiefs 4-2 to snap a six-game losing streak. Bourke, 18, set up a pair of second-period goals by 17-year-olds, first feeding Alex Forsberg to give the Cougars the lead for good before setting up a Marc McNulty marker to open a 3-1 lead. Another Cougars 17-year-old, Prince George native Chase Witala, also had a two-assist night.

Potent notables — Toronto Maple Leafs first-rounder Morgan Rielly had the winning goal in Moose Jaw's 3-2 win over Lethbridge ... Overage Nick Buonassisi tallied twice in Brandon's 3-2 win at Vancouver. Wheat Kings D Tyler Yaworski was ejected for checking to the head ... Erie Otters rookie Hayden Hodgson scored his first OHL goal in a 7-1 rout of Saginaw ... Rookies Damien Bourne, 16, and Lucas Venuto, 18, each had their OHL firsties in the Mississauga Steelheads' 6-1 road rout of Brendan Gaunce-less Belleville.
