USHL’s Stephon Williams’ barehanded save on Kevin Roy — the league’s top scorer (VIDEO)

Hockey is a copycat sport, but don't expect this puck-stopping tactic to catch on in the goaltending fraternity.

It is pretty awesome that the Waterloo Black Hawks' Stephon Williams made a save in an USHL playoff game after his catching glove fell off. It might even more awesome that the player he robbed barehanded was Kevin Roy, who's long been a YouTube phenomenon.

This actually happened Monday when Waterloo beat the Lincoln Stars to wrap up the Western Division final. Roy, who had Lincoln fans agog this season after leading the USHL with 54 goals and 104 points in 59 games, was left alone in the slot for a brief second, which would make many a goalie's pulse race. Williams dropped his goal stick, something Dominik Hasek originated in order to catch the puck with his blocker hand. But then the 19-year-old Alaska native dropped his glove that's designed to catching the puck.

Williams later told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls (Io.) Courier, "That's never happened before, and I hope it never happens again."

Waterloo went on to win that game 6-2 and advance to the final against the Green Bay Gamblers,. Green Bay won the regular-season title so it's probably considered the favourite. But the Black Hawks have to be inspired by their goalie, who risked a fractured hand to prevent a goal in a playoff game.

Here's hoping that missed chance doesn't haunt Kevin Roy so much that it prevents him from coming up with more shootout moves.
