Sunday’s 3 Stars: Trocheck gets six points to boost Spirit

No. 1 star: Vincent Trocheck, Saginaw Spirit (OHL)

The Spirit, once down in the ninth-place doldrums in their conference, likely secured a playoff berth by winning 7-1 in Windsor on Sunday. Trocheck was right in the thick of the scoring onslaught, getting a career-high six points, including five assists.

Trocheck had two helpers through the first two periods, then helped Saginaw break it open by setting up Chicago Blackhawks prospect Brandon Saad and defenceman Steven Strong early in the third period. Windsor coach Bob Boughner was none too impressed about the fact Trocheck was out on a late power play when he got his sixth point. However, the 18-year-old Pittsburgher still had to get five points to begin with. Saad, who had a four-point day himself, now has 30 goals and 68 points in just 39 games this season.

No. 2 star: Kevin Bailie, Oshawa Generals (OHL)

Bailie did something no goalie has achieved this season. He put the London Knights on a losing streak. The 20-year-old avenged being beaten for six goals in a nationally televised game vs. London on Friday by making 41 saves to help Oshawa stifle and stymie the powerhouse Knights 4-1. Bailie denied the Knights' top goal scorer, Seth Griffith, with a big glove save when a goal might have turned the tide; that stop enabled the Generals to hang on and climb into sixth place in the OHL's Eastern Conference.

The 20-year-old has been the Generals' second-half MVP with a 2.71 average and .924 save percentage since Jan. 1.

No. 3 star: Ty Rimmer, Tri-City Americans (WHL)

The Americans still have a shot at finishing first overall in the Western league thanks to their goalie making 48 saves in a 4-3 win over the Portland Winterhawks. Rimmer was spectacular against one of the most dangerous offensive squads in any junior league, particularly in the final 30 seconds when he made a great reflex save that tipped the puck just over the crossbar and denied the Winterhawks a tying goal.

The Winterhawks hold a one-point lead over Tri-City with six games to play. Tri-City got three points from Justin Feser, including the game-winning goal, while Brendan Shinnimin became the first WHLer in 11 seasons to have a 120-point year.

Honourable mention: Anthony Duclair, Quebec Remparts (QMJHL)

What? There's a dynamic Québécois forward whom the Montreal Canadiens could draft next season? Yes, yes there is. Thanks in large part to Duclair and his linemates, much-ballyhood Mikhail Grigorenko and overage left wing Frédérick Roy, the Remparts edged Cape Breton 4-3. Duclair had three points (1G-2A), scoring the first Remparts goal, setting up Roy in the second period and feeding Grigorenko for the game-winner. The Remparts' other superb 16-year-old, Adam Erne, scored for the second game in a row since returning from a concussion.

Honourable mention: Barclay Goodrow, Brampton Battalion (OHL)

Goodrow, who was bypassed in the NHL draft last summer, was a force around the goalmouth with two goals and two assists in Brampton's 5-2 win over the Misssisauga Majors. The 19-year-old wing banged home two rebounds and factored in another pair of goals, setting up teammates Dylan Blujus and Brandon Robinson. The win was big for Brampton, which kept pace with Barrie for third place in its conference. Goodrow also reached the 25-goal mark.

Potent notables — Lane Scheidl and Jordan Weal each had three points to help Regina shade Prince Albert 4-3. Weal moved into third in WHL scoring with 109 points. In the OHL, NHL first-round picks Stefan Noesen (Ottawa Senators) and Rickard Rakell (Anaheim Ducks) each scored to help Plymouth win 5-4 at Sarnia, moving within two points of first overall London ... Toronto Maple Leafs-drafted goalie Garret Sparks had 30 saves to help Guelph sweep its season series vs. Ottawa with a 4-3 win. Tyler Toffoli got his league-high 48th goal for Ottawa, which dressed just 15 skaters. Backup goalie Michael Nishi made 43 saves ... Zach O'Brien became the first QMJHLer to reach 50 goals this season and got his 100th point on the same play in Acadie-Bathurst's 4-3 shootout win at P.E.I.
