Steelheads goalie Spencer Martin stymies Generals: Friday’s 3 stars

No. 1 star: Spencer Martin, Mississauga Steelheads (OHL)

The Steelheads were badly outshot by the Oshawa Generals 40-28, but since Martin was on his game in the blue paint, it didn’t matter. The Colorado Avalanche prospect turned away all 40 shots that came his way, including 17 in the second period, to lead his club to a 4-0 win.

Seeing oodles of shots thrown at him is business as usual for Martin. He has faced 50 shots on two different occasions in October and has seen 124 pucks come at him in his last three games.

Up 3-0 midway through the third period, the Steelheads’ Bobby MacIntyre scored a short-handed marker to put the nail on the coffin.

No. 2 star: Manraj Hayer, Everett Silvertips (WHL)

At 20-years-old, Hayer scored the first hat trick of his major junior career in the Silvertips’ 6-5 win over the Vancouver Giants. All three of Hayer’s goals were crucial to Everett’s victory. His first marker in the opening period on the power play tied the game up at one. In the second period, the 5-foot-10, 180-pound centre scored at the 14:05 mark to give his team a 5-4 lead. Then in the final frame, he scored the game-winner with less than two minutes on the clock.

Joshua Winquist notched an assist on all three of Hayer’s goals.

No. 3 star: Franky Palazzese, Sudbury Wolves (OHL)

Palazzese shut the door on the Kingston Frontenacs in the Wolves’ 3-0 win. The 20-year-old goaltender stopped 37 shots to capture the third shutout of his career. This performance was a bounce-back game for Palazzese after posting a .881 save percentage in his previous contest against the Steelheads.

All three of the Wolves’ goals, one apiece from Danny Desrochers, Nathan Pancel and Dominik Kubalik, came in the middle frame.

Honourable mention: Nickolas Latta, Sarnia Sting (OHL)

Albeit it was in a 7-5 losing effort at the hands of the Barrie Colts, Latta had his best game of the season, and possibly OHL career, with three goals and one assist. He scored a goal in every period to give the Sting a chance to win the game.

The triple threat of Erik Bradford (1G-3A, +3), Mitchell Theoret (1G-2A, +2) and Detroit Red Wings prospect Andreas Athanasiou (1G-2A, +2) led the Colts to victory.

Honourable mention: Steven Trojanovic, Guelph Storm (OHL)

Trojanovic scored two goals and two assists to lead his Storm 7-2 over the North Bay Battalion. Following a scoreless first period, the 20-year-old defenceman assisted a Scott Kosmachuk marker on the power play just over a minute into the middle frame. He later set up Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Matt Finn on the man advantage and scored an even-strength goal to close out the period. He ended the night by scoring the game’s final goal.

Honourable mention: Mitch Holmberg, Spokane Chiefs (WHL)

Holmberg helped his quest to win the WHL’s scoring title in the Chiefs’ 7-1 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings. He notched two assists in the second period and scored a power-play goal in the final frame. His three-point night gives him 17 goals and 35 points in 14 games on the year.

Chiefs team captain Reid Gow tallied four assists on the back end and puck-stopper Eric Williams turned away 35 of 36 shots.

Potent notables – Tampa Bay Lighting prospect Jonathan Drouin (3A, +3), Darcy Ashley (3A, +3), and Timo Meier (2G, +2) had big nights in the Halifax Mooseheads’ 5-2 victory over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan… Cameron Brace (2G) and Holden Cook (2G-1A, +3) led the Owen Sound Attack over the Plymouth Whalers 6-4… Edmonton Oilers first-round defender Darnell Nurse scored two goals and one assist for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds while Vancouver Canucks first-round centre Brendan Gaunce did the same for the Belleville Bulls in the Greyhounds’ 7-5 win… Blueliner Aaron Hoyles had a four-point night (1G-3A, +4) in the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada’s 7-2 win over the Sherbrooke Phoenix… 2014 NHL draft prospect and Portland Winterhawks centre Chase De Leo scored a pair of goals in his team’s 6-3 victory over the Kootenay Ice… defenceman Ashton Sautner (2G-1A, +3) led the Edmonton Oil Kings over the Regina Pats 7-2… Kelowna Rockets goalie Jordon Cooke stopped 28 of 29 shots in a 4-1 win over the Victoria Royals.
