Scott Laughton caps a day of extra helpings of free hockey: Thanksgiving Day 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Scott Laughton, Oshawa Generals (OHL)

Laughton (1G-1A, +2) was not named a star at GM Centre, even though he was in on the final two Generals goals in a gripping 4-3 OT win over the division rival Belleville Bulls. On a Thanksgiving Monday when all three Ontario Hockey League games required overtime, Laughton appeared to have set up the winning goal with 1:47 left when he bumped a Bull off the puck behind the net and centred to onrushing rookie Michael Dal Colle (1G-1A, +1) for a one-timed goal. The Bulls forced overtime with 36 seconds left when Garrett Hooey (1G-1A) ripped a shot that went in off Carolina Hurricanes-drafted goalie Daniel Altshuller's glove. However, Laughton went off on a 1-on-1 rush in overtime and befuddled the Bulls with a shot that struck a defender's stick and redirected past fellow NHL first-rounder Malcolm Subban (23 saves on 27 shots).

Generals captain Boone Jenner (1G, -1) was named the game's first star. The Columbus Blue Jackets prospect had his league-leading 16th point.

No . 2 star: Brett Foy, Misssissauga Steelheads (OHL)

Foy (2G, +1) pulled off an improbable win against the typically defensively taut Brampton Battalion, coming back from two goals down with eight minutes to play for a 4-3 win in overtime. The 19-year-old Foy was one of the most energetic Steelheads throughout the afternoon. His goal with 7:35 left in regulation gave Mississauga its window to tie the game against its Peel Region rivals. That seemed to close when Mississauga's Andrew Goldberg was penalized in the final two minutes. However, apparently the tryptophan kicked in on the Battalion at that moment, as they allowed Riley Brace to get open for long lead pass, leading to him beating Matej Machovsky five-hole for a tying short-handed goal with 31 seconds left. The Battalion evidently could not group, as Foy ended the game 2:49 into extra time.

No. 3 star: JP Anderson, Sarnia Sting (OHL)

The overage goalie secured an extra point for the Sting against the Windsor Spitfires, stymieing all six shootout attempts before Reid Boucher converted for a 3-2 Sarnia victory. Up until the point Boucher tallied, it felt like Anderson (32 saves on 34 shots in the game) and Windsor's Jaroslav Pavelka (31-of-33) would keep each team and the crowd from getting home for Thanksgiving dinner. Anderson's shootout stops included a save on his former teammate, Derek Schoenmakers, who had scored earlier in the game.

Honourable mention: Barclay Goodrow, Brampton Battalion (OHL)

Goodrow (1G-1A) staked Brampton to a two-goal lead, which it typically makes stand up. The 19-year-old put a backhand pass right on a tape to Brenden Miller for a goal and also wired in a wrong-wing wrister for his fifth goal in seven games.

Potent notables — Boucher, a New Jersey Devils pick, also scored in regulation time for Sarnia ... Dal Colle was on the ice for all of Oshawa's scoring.
