Sam Reinhart gets 5 points in Kootenay Ice’s big win: Thursday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Sam Reinhart, Kootenay Ice (WHL)

Reinhart (1G-4A, +3) and his right-hand man Jaedon Descheneau (2G-1A, +2) are all but making the Saddledome their personal fiefdom, as they took over to lead the Ice to a 6-5 Game 5 win over the Calgary Hitmen and a 3-2 series lead.

Calgary scored on its first shot of the game for the second time in the series and that proved moot. The Reinhart-Zach Franko-Descheneau line, which combined for 10 points, got the goal back quickly. Reinhart, showing why he's a consensus top 5 pick for the NHL draft, scored unassisted in the last minute of the opening period and then came right back by assisting on a tally in the opening minute of the second. Those goals gave the Ice a little nest egg, as they scored twice in 65 seconds a bit later in frame and widened the gap to 6-3 when a Descheneau goal was ruled to have gone with 0.1 second on the clock.

It was a command performance from Reinhart, who's now got 13 points in five playoff games. Not to bury a lede, but one can only imagine what kind of emotional lift the Ice will get for Game 6 from this bit of news. Winger Tim Bozon, who contracted meningitis during a road trip a month ago, will be cheering on his teammates.

No. 2 star: Ivan Barbashev, Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL)

The 18-year-old Russian scored twice, including the winner three minutes into the third, as the 'Cats extended their season with a 3-2 Game 5 win over the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. With its season on the brink, Moncton started strongly with two goals in the first 10 minutes, including a Barbashev salvo. The Armada tied it 2-2 by the end of 4-0 minutes. That's when Barbashev, who seemed to be omnipresent in his potential last game before the NHL draft, spun off a check and whacked a rebound by Étienne Marcoux to put Moncton back in front.

The play actually continued for a few seconds after the puck quickly ricocheted out of the net. Keep an eye peeled for the check Barbashev threw after sprinting back to his zone.

No. 3 star: Logan Nelson, Victoria Royals (WHL)

The first star in a franchise's inaugural series-clinching win, Victoria's 4-2 decision over Spokane, has to be recognized. The Royals and Chiefs were even midway through the third when Nelson (1G-1A, +2) set up linemate Austin Carroll (also 1G-1A, +2) for a 3-2 lead. With 4:19 left, the Nelson, Carroll and Steven Hodges (2A, +2) connected again to put the game away.

Victoria had a lot of men of the hour, of course. Its defence — Travis Brown, Brett Cote, Jordan Fransoo, Ryan Gagnon, Joe Hicketts and Keegan Kanzig, the sextet who suited up Thursday — threw a blanket over the Chiefs' big guns. Western League scoring champ Mitch Holmberg, Spokane's franchise leader in career goals, managed only one assist across the four games. Second-leading team scorer Mike Aviani also had a donut under the G.

Honourable mention: Martin Reway, Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL)

Gatineau completing its sweep of Cape Breton — final aggregate score, 29-7 — was a gimme. Reway did some stuff, though, as he finished the round with 11 points in four games.

Potent notables — Edmonton Oilers pick Greg Chase is on a nine-game point streak for Calgary ... Niagara IceDogs goalie Brent Moran has a 2.25 average and .938 save percentage while helping his seventh-seeded team take a 3-1 lead over North Bay ... Vancouver Canucks signing Dane Fox has an OHL-most 12 points (6G-6A) for the Erie Otters, who beat Saginaw in overtime to conclude a five-game series. Oshawa teammates Michael Dal Colle (5G-5A) and Hunter (Big Rig) Smith (2G-8A) are tied for second with 10 each during a four-game win over Misissauga. London Knights captain and San Jose Sharks second-rounder Chris Tierney had nine during a sweep of Windsor ... In the QMJHL, Anthony Mantha (2G, +2) and Val-d'Or completed its sweep of Acadie-Bathurst ... Jonathan Drouin finished with 13 points in Halifax's four-game sweep of Charlottetown, which went out with an 11-3 loss on Thursday.
