Pollock’s four points help solidify grasp for Oil Kings on WHL wildcard playoff spot: Sunday’s 3 stars

No. 1 star: Brett Pollock, Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL)

Pollock came through for the Oil Kings when they needed it the most, a big four point night for him in a four point game for Edmonton.

The Dallas Stars’ second rounder set the tone for the Oil Kings with three points in the first period as they went on to beat the Prince Albert Raiders 5-3 at Rexall Place.

The only goal Pollock didn’t have a hand in was the winner, as Mads Eller earned his fifth of the season just 21 seconds into the second frame that stood up as the winning marker, but he did have a hand in all the other goals to keep the Oil Kings in the last playoff spot in the East, seven points up on Moose Jaw and 13 points up on Prince Albert with the victory.

Pollock evened last year’s point totals with 55, this season scoring four more goals so far in ten less games. Anything further will be a career high for the three-year WHL vet from just outside Edmonton. He has a four game point streak, with seven points in that span.

Pollock’s linemate Lane Bauer scored a goal of his own and added two assists for a three point night, while the other man on the line, Edgars Kulda, potted the game’s opening goal.

The Oil Kings piled 39 shots on two Raider netminders, with Rylan Parenteau getting the heave-ho after just over a period’s worth of action, enough for the loss. Nick McBride stopped all but one of the 21 pucks he saw in relief.

Tristan Jarry made 23 saves for the win in net, as the Oil Kings improved to 29-28-4-2 on the year. Prince Albert fell to 24-35-2-1, and are seeing their playoff chances slip away, 13 points back of a wildcard spot with 10 games left to play. The two teams meet in Prince Albert for a rematch Tuesday.

No. 2 star: Dmytro Timashov, Quebec Remparts (QMJHL)

Timashov had another monster game for the Remparts, with a goal and three assists in a 5-1 home win over the rival Chicoutimi Saguenéens at the Colisée Pepsi.

Timashov notched assists on the Remps first three goals, before adding his own goal at 5:58 of the third period, with netminder Callum Booth earning the only assist on the goal.

Four points gives the pint-sized Quebec winger 84 on the year, with a whopping 66 assists. The playmaker has six points in his last two games. He’s also 18 points up on the next rookie for the newcomer scoring lead.

Adam Erne potted his 38th goal of the campaign, adding an assist in the win, and defender Ryan Graves also had a goal and an assist in the win for the Remparts, who saw 31 saves for Booth. They improve to 37-21-1-2 with the win, seven points back of division leader Rimouski. Chicoutimi fell to 25-29-4-2.

No. 3 star: Anthony DeAngelo, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)

Sault Ste. Marie laid the smackdown on the London Knights Sunday, and DeAngelo was in the thick of it.

The Tampa Bay first round blueliner put up five points in the Greyhounds 8-3 win. He scored twice and added assists on three others.

DeAngelo scored in the second and the third, and had points in every period. His five point game gives him 39 points in 20 games for the Soo, passing his 38 point output with his previous team this season, the Sarnia Sting. After three and a half seasons with the Sting, DeAngelo was traded to Sault Ste. Marie at mid-season.

The Greyhounds came within one point of Oshawa, who also won Sunday, for the OHL-lead. They improved to 47-11-0-2. London fell to 37-21-0-3, five points up on Guelph for third in the Western Conference.
