The Memorial Cup host Quebec Remparts will surely be solid in a good time. In the interim, before reinforcements from NHL rookie camp drift back, there's much vicarious glee to be gleaned from results such as a 6-1 spanking at the hands of the Phoenix on First Friday.

Wieser (2G-2A, +4) and Swiss compatriot Kay Schweri (4A, +4) went to work fast for Sherbrooke, which could sorely use consistent scoring from someone other than Montreal Canadiens draft pick Daniel Audette. Wieser got the first two goals of the night, tallying 2:31 before the end of the first period and again 6:29 into the second on setups from Schweri.

The Swiss tandem assisted on Vincent Deslauriers' 3-0 goal midway through the second. In the second minute of the third, Schweri and Wieser also earned the apples on Julien Bahl's goal that affirmed that it was the Phoenix's night.

No. 2 star: Evgeny Svechnikov, Cape Breton Screaming Eagles

Since Ivan Barbashev and Vladimir Tkachev are away at NHL rookie camps, someone had to make sure the Moncton Coliseum crowd was treated to a big night from a skilled Russian. Unfortunately for the Moncton Wildcats, that came from the much ballyhooed Eagles newcomer, as Svechnikov (1G-2A) was first star in a 6-3 road win.

The right wing fed Timothé Simard for the icebreaker with just nine seconds left in the first, helping the Eagles gain some confidence on the road. Svechnikov, who joined the Eagles just last month, snipped an unassisted goal in the following period and also assisted on Maxim Lazarev's marker that opened a 5-1 lead in the third

No. 3 star: Joey Ratelle, Drummondville Voltigeurs

The Volts have been pegged to finish near the bottom of the league, but two short-handed goals 36 seconds apart sparked them to a 4-1 win over Rouyn-Noranda. Ratelle (2G, +1) sniped the first of those man-down markers and also buried 8:51 into the second to open a four-goal lead.

Honourable mention: Christophe Boivin, Acadie-Bathurst Titan

Bathurst beat Halifax 4-1 by the margin of three goals from its past two first-round picks, with 16-year-old Jordan Maher getting the icebreaker and Boivin enjoying his first career two-goal game. The latter struck on the power play with 46 seconds left in the first. The 5-foot-7 Boivin also got a big tack-on tally 4:25 into the third.

Potent notables — Charlottetown's Daniel Sprong, a potential NHL first-rounder, tallied in the Islanders' 3-2 shootout win over Saint John ... Rimouski's Alexis Loiseau (1G-2A, +3) helped Rimouski shade Victoriaville 6-5 ... Shawinigan's Dennis Yan, a former U.S. under-17 team member, scored a goal and had an assist in his first game.
