The Peterborough Petes had one of their larger crowds of the season on Thursday to see Max Domi, Mitchell Marner and the London Knights — only to have their rookie, Jonathan Ang, deliver the big fireworks display with a disgusting dangle for the dagger goal.

The Petes' 4-1 upset of the Knights was sealed by a spectacular third-period goal by Ang. It all started with a between-the-legs pass from Eric Cornel and included the 17-year-old rookie making a between-the-legs deke around Julius Bergman, a  San Jose Sharks second-round pick who played for Sweden in the world junior championship, before sweeping across the goalmouth to beat goalie Michael Giugovaz.

"I was coming down the wing and just decided, 'you know what,  I'm going to try it,' " a grinning Ang told reporters in Peterborough. "So I did, and it worked."

Ang, whom the Petes chose in the first round of the 2014 OHL priority selection draft, ended up paying Cornel back by sliding the puck to his teammate for the last-minute empty-netter. At a listed 5-foot-11 and 150 pounds, the Markham, Ont., native still has a lot of physical maturing to do in order to become a top-flight junior player, but that goal, his ninth this season, showed why the Petes believe Ang has very high upside.

Oddly enough, the Petes, who are holding down the final Eastern Conference playoff spot in the OHL, are 5-0 this season when they draw a crowd of at least 3,000 to the Peterborough Memorial Centre. That record also includes wins over other OHL heavies such as the Erie Otters and Oshawa Generals. Apparently, Ang is bent on giving fans more motivation to watch.
