OJHL grad Brock Higgs scores sick toe-drag goal for Rensselaer (VIDEO)

When a great goal is scored in the NCAA, it's only sporting to acknowledge it on what's ostensibly a junior hockey blog. Saturday, when Rensselaer Poltyechnic Institute pounced on Princeton for a 5-2 home win, RPI senior Brock Higgs scored a sweetly pleasing goal.

During the second period, the 21-year-old grad of the Ontario Junior Hockey League's Kingston Voyageurs stole the puck and motored away on the rush. Higgs then left Princeton freshman defenceman Quin Pompi knock-kneed with the classic how-it's-going toe-drag deke before swooping in on goal to tuck the puck under the left pad of Sean Bonar, a grad of the BCHL's Penticton Vees.

Princeton doesn't have namebars on their sweaters. Pompi might have been grateful for that after getting beat. To be fair to the Tigers, they were a depleted team Saturday, with offensive leader Andrew Calof, a former standout with the Central Canada league's Nepean Raiders, among the injured.

Higgs is RPI's second-leading scorer with 11 goals and 19 points over 16 games. He is also a rarity in NCAA Division I these days, a player who actually broke in as an 18-year-old true freshman.

Prior to pursuing college puck at RPI, Higgs played two seasons for Voyageurs in his hometown in Kingston, where he was a point-a-game player in the OJHL. He also helped Kingston win the Dudley Hewitt Cup in 2009 as Central Canada regional champions.
