OHL star Josh Ho-Sang sent home from New York Islanders training camp for lateness

Josh Ho-Sang hardly helped his own cause to be viewed as a hockey player solely and less as a Hockey Twitter meme. The highly scrutinized New York Islanders first-round pick, who's not one for being put into the little box that most athletes are put into, especially in hockey, was supposed to get some serious run at the Isles training camp before rejoining the Ontario Hockey League's Niagara IceDogs.

Instead, Ho-Sang was dealt a tough lesson as the Islanders sent him back to Niagara on Friday for being late to the first day of their main training camp. Who knows, perhaps there was confusion over whether the practice session was in Brooklyn or on Long Island.

The puck world prizes punctuality as much as any other workplace, and this is why one does tend to hear teenage prospects refer to lead-up to the NHL draft as a "job interview". There is more than a grain of truth to that agent-coached sound byte. Even if there was a legitimate extenuating circumstance for being late, Ho-Sang should at least have told the Islanders.

It's no doubt disappointing for the 19-year-old Ho-Sang, who on talent and creativity should rate a chance at making Team Canada this season but will have to show he can toe the line under coach Dave Lowry. Meantime, it appears the IceDogs, expected to be one of the strongest teams in the OHL, will get one of their stars back in time for their season opener on Sept. 25.
