No. 1 star: Mitchell Marner, London Knights (OHL)

The 17-year-old potential NHL first-round pick was locked in, scoring his first Ontario Hockey League hat trick to lead London past the Windsor Spitfires 4-3 for their fifth win in a row. Marner (3G, +3) finished off two setups from overage Matt Rupert (2A, +2) in the first period to help the Knights build an early three-goal lead. His first came on a perfectly placed shot just under the crossbar.

After the Spitfires tied the game in the second, Marner tapped in his hat trick goal to restore the Knights to the lead. London made that stand up the rest of the way. Christian Dvorak (2A, +3) also helped contribute to Marner's big night.

No. 2 star: Cody Porter, Vancouver Giants (WHL)

Riding a four-game skid, the Giants dammed up the area around their 17-year-old backup goalie and suppressed the Seattle Thunderbirds 1-0, with Porter making 38 saves in just his second career start. The North Vancouver native, who obviously earned his first Western League shutout and win, made 19 saves in the first period to give the Giants a fighting chance. A big right pad save on Seattle speedster Scott Eansor tightened the deadlock, as did a bit of good fortune when the Thunderbirds' Mathew Barzal dented the post on a short-handed breakaway in the third.

Porter protected the goose egg until Alec Baer got the only goal with 7:14 left. That was enough for the young goalie and his legion of shot blockers to work with.

No. 3 star: Anthony Beauvillier, Shawinigan Cataractes (QMJHL)

Beauvillier kicked his game up a notch, as the 17-year-old helped Shawinigan take down the vaunted Rimouski Océanic 5-4 in overtime. The splendid sophomore fed Sébastien Gauthier for the winner with 1:46 left in overtime, helping the Cataractes avoid heartbreak after squandering a three-goal lead.

Shawinigan shot out to a big lead thanks to scoring four goals in a 10-minute span of the second period. Beauvillier (1G-2A) began the onslaught with an unassisted goal and also set up fellow 17-year-old Dennis Yan for a power-play tally.

What did Connor McDavid do?

The phenom is now averaging exactly one goal and two assists per game for the 13-0-0-1 Erie Otters, with 14 goals and 28 assists for 42 points in 14 games. McDavid (1G-3A, +3), OHL second-leading scorer Dylan Strome (2G, +2) and McDavid's regular right wing Nick Betz (1G-2A, +4) were the three stars in a 7-4 win over Ottawa.

Honourable mention: Nathan Pancel, Sudbury Wolves

Thanks to a hat trick from their overage finisher, the Wolves beat the Niagara IceDogs 7-2 to end a franchise-record 13-game losing streak. Pancel (3G-1A, +5) is a former 40-goal scorer who came into the night with only two on the year, but benefited from the return of Buffalo Sabres prospect Nick Baptiste (1G-2A, +4). The two Ottawa-area natives were in on three of the five Wolves goals in the third period.

The result means the IceDogs (2-12-0-0) and Wolves (2-13-0-0) share the league doghouse.
