Lightning pick Jonathan Drouin scores hatty to lead Mooseheads over Islanders: Friday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Jonathan Drouin, Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)

The Tampa Bay Lightning first-round pick matched the Charlottetown Islanders in goals. He scored three markers to lead the Mooseheads to a 4-3 victory. Drouin got the Halifax ball rolling in the second period with a pair of goals just over two minutes apart. He completed the hatty early in the final frame with his second of the night on the man advantage.

Drouin sits tied for third in the QMJHL in points with 12 goals and 35 points in 16 games. He is ultimately scoring at the same rate as he was last year, where he notched 41 goals and 105 points in 49 games, with only a slight increase of .05 points per game. But what’s interesting is the 5-foot-11, 192-pound winger is getting over one shot on net more a game this year, going from a 3.5 average to 4.6. In doing so, his shooting percentage has dropped from 23.7 to 16.2. It seems this is likely because it’s near impossible to duplicate a shooting percentage over 20 per cent and he doesn’t have Colorado Avalanche sniper Nathan MacKinnon by his side this year.

No. 2 star: Francois Brassard, Quebec Ramparts (QMJHL)

It’s safe to say Brassard is focued. The Ottawa Senators prospect captured his second shutout in as many games with 29 saves in a 4-0 win over the Shawinigan Cataractes. Not to mention, he hasn’t let a puck get by him, not counting the shootout, in just over 150 minutes. This impressive stat gave him the slight edge on the Acadie-Bathurst Titan's Jacob Brennan, who matched his performance, for the No. 2 star.

Nick Sorensen and Cody Donaghey scored one apiece in the first 10 minutes of the middle frame to give the Ramparts the lead. Anthony Duclair closed out the contest’s scoring with two goals, both assisted by Brent Turnbull.

No. 3 star: Jacob Brennan, Acadie-Bathurst Titan (QMHJL)

The Moncton Wildcats couldn’t squeeze one past Brennan as he finished the game with a 29-save shutout. In the 2-0 win, the 19-year-old goalie stymied Moncton’s power play, stopping their three opportunities.

The only puck the Titans got past Wildcats goalie Alex Dubeau came just 22 seconds into the second period off Patrick Walsh’s stick. Scott Oke sealed the win with an empty net marker at the 19:03 mark in the third.

Honourable mentions: Zachary Fortin and Anthony DeLuca, Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL)

Fortin completed the QMJHL shutout hat trick. He shut the door on the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, turning aside all 27 shots that came his way in a 3-0 win. This type of performance deserves a star, but the competition was unusually tough tonight. Two less saves ultimately put him behind his puck-stopping competition.

DeLuca was involved in all three of Rimouski’s goals. In the opening frame, he netted one just over three minutes into the game and set up a Michael Joly marker roughly five minutes later. The 5-foot-8, 198-pound winger would end the night with an empty net goal in the last minute of play.

Honourable mention: Scott Kosmachuk, Guelph Storm (OHL)

Kosmachuk scored a hat trick and an assist in a high scoring 9-4 win over the Peterborough Petes. He notched a pair of two-point periods, netting two goals in the first frame and a marker and a helper in the second. The four-point night gives the Winnipeg Jets prospect 18 goals and 35 points in 21 games on the year.

Twelve Guelph players notched a point in the game, including Hunter Garlent (4A, +2) and Pius Suter (2G).

Potent notables – Erie Otters puck-stopper Devin Williams posted an 18-save shutout in a 3-0 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds... Sherbrooke Phoenix’s Tim Wieser notched three assists in his club’s 6-3 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs… 2014 NHL draft prospect Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 30 of 31 shots to lead the Plymouth Whalers to a 2-1 shootout win over the Mississauga Steelheads… Michael Dal Colle scored in overtime to lift the Oshawa Generals over the Ottawa 67’s 3-2… Spokane Chiefs’ Mitch Holmberg (2G-2A) and Reid Gow (3A) had big nights in a 5-2 victory over the Prince George Cougars… Everett Silvertips' Tyler Sandhu (2G, +2) and Manraj Hayer (1G-1A, +2) had two-point nights in a 3-2 win over the Portland Winterhawks...
