Jonathan Drouin earns 5 points in Mooseheads’ series-tying road win: Wednesday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Jonathan Drouin, Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)

Any night where a player ties Mario Lemieux for career playoff points is usually a good night. Drouin now has 98 points in 47 games over the past three post-seasons after putting up five on Wednesday, matching what Super Mario put up for the old Laval Voisins from 1982 through '84 in a much higher-scoring era.

Drouin (2G-3A, +1, with seven dangerous shots) carried Halifax to a 5-4 series-tying win at Val-d'Or in the QMJHL's road-warrior semifinal. The Tampa Bay Lightning prospect's massive night started innocuously enough with a mere two power-play assists during the opening stanza to pull the Mooseheads, who have Kevin Darveau in goal instead of national team 'tender Zach Fucale, even after 20 minutes.

Halifax has had a knack for big second periods in these playoffs. Drouin scored through an Andrew Ryan screen 2:57 into the frame. Just more than two minutes later, after rookie Andrew Shewfelt drew a penalty, Drouin set up Nikolaj Ehlers for the 4-2 goal.

The Foreurs dominated the final period, but a Drouin breakaway goal gave Halifax just enough cushion.

No. 2 star: Nic Petan, Portland Winterhawks (WHL)

Petan tied a 28-year-old Winterhawks club record by scoring three power-play goals in the 5-1 win over Kelowna that opened a 3-1 Western Conference final lead. The Winnipeg Jets prospect has played second fiddle to 50-goal scorer Oliver Bjorkstrand in recent weeks, but tallied late in the first and midway through the second to vault Portland into the lead. Following a Bjorkstrand short-hander, Petan scored his hat trick goal later in the frame off a sweet toe-drag move.

Brendan Leipsic (3A, -1) and Derrick Pouliot (3A, +1) assisted on on Petan's goals. With the three helpers, Pittsburgh Penguins signing Pouliot moved into into a tie with former Pen Rob Brown for third on the all-time WHL playoff assists list.

No. 3 star: Brett Pollock, Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL)

Does the draft sleeper label slipper still fit? Pollock (2G-1A, +2), whose draft stock has improved over the back half of this season, was integral in Edmonton beating Medicine Hat 4-1 to move within a victory of setting up a possible Oil Kings-Winterhawks rubber match in the league final. The Tigers kept the Oil Kings at bay for nearly a period and a half before Pollock set up captain Griffin Reinhart for the opening goal 7:16 into the second. The Oil Kings put on a late push and got rewarded when Pollock sniped seven seconds before the intermission to put the Tigers in an insurmountable 2-0 hole. Just for good measure, Pollock scored again in the third.

Honourable mention: Étienne Marcoux, Blainville-Boisbriand Armada (QMJHL)

The overage goalie earned first-star honours for the second night in a row after making 28 saves in the Armada's series-tying 4-2 Game 4 win over the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Marcoux made a dozen saves in the second while the Armada were scoring three goals, including Nikita Jevpalovs' team-high 10th, to put the Drakkar in a deep, deep hole.
