Jonathan Drouin absorbs knee-on-knee, scores 2 goals in Halifax Mooseheads win

Three weeks out from Canada's world junior championship, Jonathan Drouin suffered a scare on Thursday night during the Halifax Mooseheads' win over the Victoriaville Tigres.

Before getting three points in a Mooseheads win that halted the team's two-game skid, Droun was shaken up in the first period by a knee-on-knee hit from Victoriaville's Tristan Pomerleau. The call was only a two-minute penalty.

When Drouin returned, no worse for wear, he scored twice in succession to give Halifax a firm grip on the win. The first one was a beaut where he gamboled east-west through the high slot, then threaded the needle to find a tiny hole in a top corner over goalie Brandon Whitney.

In that same period, NHL draft prospect Nikolaj Ehlers and Mooseheads defenceman Matt Murphy generated an odd-man opportunity during a penalty kill. Drouin scored a short-handed goal with the NHL 94-style one-timer from between the hash marks.

All is well that ends well, then. Halifax has two more games this weekend before Drouin leaves for Team Canada's camp next week in Toronto. It would be impolitic for Hockey Canada to hope he could find a way to get out of playing so he arrives safe and sound. Plus medical diagnoses have become a lot more rigorous since Ferris Bueller mastered the art of faking sick.
