Habs pick Jeremy Gregoire stars in Baie-Comeau’s series-tying win: Wednesday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Jérémy Grégoire, Baie-Comeau Drakkar (QMJHL)

Grégoire (1G-1A, +1), a sixth-round choice of the Montreal Canadiens, was one of several cogs that helped Baie-Comeau preempt the Anthony Mantha show with a had-to-have-it 4-3 overtime road win that knotted the QMJHL final 2-2. The Drakkar never led until the game's 75th minute, when the 18-year-old Grégoire set up captain Félix Girard for the overtime winner.

Mantha (2G, for a QMJHL-leading 22) flicked in his own rebound for a short-handed goal that opened a 3-2 lead with 4:14 left in regulation time. Baie-Comeau, though, scarcely had to think about the prospect of going down 3-1 in the series. Just 39 seconds later, Alexandre Ranger got in rebounding position and got a classic garbage goal to re-tie the game.

Grégoire delivered in similar fashion for the first Drakkar goal 13:34 into the first. All three of the Drakkar's regulation goals came within five minutes of Val-d'Or taking the lead. That's just how Éric Veilleux-coached teams roll.

No. 2 star: Mitch Moroz, Edmonton Oil Kings (OHL)

Moroz (1G, +1) was named first star of Edmonton's series-tying 2-0 win over the Portland Winterhawks in a 'homer' series that is now down to a best-of-3. The clubs were deadlocked near the midpoint of the second period when the Edmonton Oilers second-rounder, having used his big frame to clear some space, was on the spot to cash in off a Dysin Mayo shot that ricocheted off the end boards. Ottawa Senators first-rounder Curtis Lazar scored his eighth of the playoffs with 10:43 remaining to give Edmonton some insurance.

No. 3 star: Pius Suter, Guelph Storm (OHL)

Suter (2G, +2) had his first multi-goal playoff game during the Storm's 10-1 road win that opened a 3-1 series lead over North Bay. The crafty Swiss rookie got the icebreaker in the game's fifth minute by surprising Jake Smith with a shot from the side of the net. Later in the period, after Zack Mitchell (3A, +2) was stopped on a short-handed partial breakway, Suter swooped in and jammed the puck home for a 3-0 bulge.

Potent notables — Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Tristan Jarry improved his playoff goaltending line to 2.01/.927 with his 26-save shutout for Edmonton ... Mitchell, a Minnesota Wild signing, leads the OHL playoff scoring race 31-29 over Guelph linemate Kerby Rychel.
