Here is what Sam Bennett is capable of now that he is recovered from shoulder surgery, and is older than stronger.

On Wednesday, the Calgary Flames top pick, playing in his fourth game back with the Kingston Frontenacs, showed off his skill and his will to get to the net while scoring a sweet end-to-end goal. After winding up from the Frontenacs zone, Bennett went 1-on-3 against the Mississauga Steelheads. The 18-year-old, at full speed, played keepaway from centre Bryson Cianfrone and overage defenceman Brandon Devlin, then tapped the puck past goalie Jacob Brennan to consummate the highlight-reel goal.

That was Bennett's fifth goal in four games since rejoining Kingston after an extended stay with with Calgary to get up to game readiness. It looks like he never left, since that goal brimmed with the boundless certitude that characterized his game last season. It didn't look like there was any force that was going to keep the 18-year-old from Holland Landing, Ont., from getting to the net on that play.

The Flames are going to have a player in due time. Meantime, with Bennett back and a strong goalie in Lucas Peressini, Kingston is an intriguing playoff darkhorse. Bennett was hobbled by through groin and shoulder injuries last spring when the Frontenacs' playoff woes were extended by a seven-game first-round loss against Peterborough.
