No. 1 Star: Connor McDavid, Erie Otters (OHL)

As the Connor McDavid show continues, the Kitchener Rangers became his latest victim. The Newmarket, Ont., native netted two goals and two assists in his third straight game as the Otters pulled off a commanding 8-3 victory. After assisting an Alex DeBrincat (2G-1A, +4) marker, McDavid netted his first goal at the 4:43 mark in the opening frame to give the Otters a two-goal lead. He went on to set up a second DeBrincat goal and scored an unassisted marker in the second period.

McDavid wasn’t the only highly regarded 2015 NHL draft prospect to pad his stats against the Rangers as Dylan Strome notched three helpers. He was in on goals from DeBrincat, McDavid and Troy Donnay (1G-1A, +4).

Throughout Erie's first five matches on the year, McDavid has seven goals and 16 points while Strome has one goal and 16 points. In other news, Otters head coach Kris Knoblauch doesn’t have trouble sleeping at night.

No. 2 Star: Dennis Yan, Shawinigan Cataractes (QMJHL)

Albeit it was in a 6-5 losing effort at the hands of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, Yan had his best game in his rookie season with the Cataractes. The 17-year-old import scored a hat trick and added a helper while maintaining a plus four. Following setting up an Anthony Beauviller (1G-2A, +2) marker in the first period, he scored all three of his goals in the middle frame. The impressive four-point effort puts Yan at over a point-per-game ratio on the year with eight goals and 11 points in 10 contests.

Russian import Egor Popov (3A) and Nicholas Blanchard (2G-1A) netted three points apiece for the Titan.

No. 3 Star: Spencer Martin, Mississauga Steelheads (OHL)

The red-hot Martin stood on his head as the Steelheads knocked off the Kingston Frontenacs 5-1. He made 42 saves on 43 shots with 19 of them coming in the final fame. The Colorado Avalanche prospect now has an outstanding .941 save percentage throughout his first four games.

Nathan Bastian (2G, +3) and Bobby MacIntyre (2A, +3) both posted two-point nights for the Steelheads.

Honourable mention: Eric Comrie, Tri-City Americans (WHL)

Comrie showed the Regina Pats that 1974 was a long time ago. Following a pre-game celebration of the Queen City Kids’ 1974 Memorial Cup champion team, the Winnipeg Jets prospect stymied the Pats’ offense. He stopped 29 of 30 rubber bullets in the 30-shots apiece game to lead the Americans to a 3-1 victory.

The star goalie’s brother – Ty Comrie – shone on the Americans’ back end with a two-helper night. It was a big night for him as he scored six assists throughout 64 games last year.

Honourable mention: Ty Edmonds, Prince George Cougars (WHL)

The 18-year-old netminder turned away 31 of 32 pucks as the Cougars knocked off the Vancouver Giants 2-1. Edmonds made 24-straight saves throughout the first 40 minutes and helped shutdown the Giants’ six attempts on the man advantage.

Potent notables: Maxime St-Cyr (3G-1A, +1) and Valentin Zykov (2G-3A, +1) led the Baie-Comeau Drakkar to a 9-4 shellacking over the Chicoutimi Sagueneens… Anthony DeLuca (3A, +2) and Alexis Loiseau (2G-1A, +3) helped the Rimouski Oceanic pull out a 6-5 shootout win against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada… Val-D’or Foreurs forward Anthony Beauregard netted a hat trick in a 5-2 victory over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles… Calgary Flames prospect Hunter Smith notched two goals as the Oshawa Generals beat the Plymouth Whalers 5-3… Edmonton Oilers pick Kyle Platzer (2G-1A, +2) led the Owen Sound Attack to an 8-2 win over the Sudbury Wolves… Barrie Colts puck-stopper Mackenzie Blackwood turned aside 47 of 50 shots in a 4-3 victory against the London Knights… Chase Lang scored twice as his Calgary Hitmen fell to the Victoria Royals 3-2… Kyle Becker (2G-1A, +2) helped the Medicine Hat Tigers knocked off the Red Deer Rebels 5-1… Swift Current Broncos forward Jake DeBrusk scored two goals and one assist and Landon Bow posted a 26-save shutout in a 5-0 win over the Kootenay Ice… Matt Needham potted two goals as the Kamloops Blazers downed the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-1… the Carson Stadnyk-led (2G-1A) Everett Silvertips knocked off the Portland Winterhawks 6-2.
