Ekblad puts four on the board in Colts’ rout of Fronts: Saturday’s 3 stars

No. 1 star: Aaron Ekblad, Barrie Colts (OHL)

Ekblad had a night to remember from the back end in Barrie’s 8-5 win over Kingston.

The 2014-eligible rearguard scored four times and added an assist on the night he was named captain of Team Orr for the BMO Top Prospects Game. He scored three times on the man advantage and once shorthanded to give the Colts their 21st win of the season, tied for second in the Central Division. It was the first multi-goal game of his OHL career.

Ekblad scored the first two goals of the game and then connected twice more in the second, adding his assist on one of Barrie’s two empty netters on the night. Three of his goals were assisted by Joseph Blandisi, who added another for a four point night. Andreas Athanasiou scored twice and set up two more, while Zach Hall had a trio of helpers.

Robert Polesello had two assists for Kingston, and Sam Bennett, Warren Steele and Michael Moffat each had a goal and an assist.

In a tough game for the netminders, Mackenzie Blackwood earned the win between the pipes, stopping 31-of-36, while Matt Mahalak stopped 34-of-40.

Barrie rose to 21-17-1-2 on the year, while Kingston fell to 24-13-2-2.

No. 2 star: Eric Cornel, Peterborough Petes (OHL)

Cornel notched a career-high five points in Peterborough’s 6-2 win over North Bay.

Cornel scored twice and assisted on three others. He had the first two goals of the game, including the first one exactly one minute into the game, setting the tone. The Petes ended the first period up three and never looked back.

The 2014-eligible prospect got help from winger Nick Ritchie, who had a goal and two assists of his own.

Andrew D’Agostini stood on his head for Peterborough to keep the difference alive. He made 41 saves for the win, as North Bay led in shots 43-24.

The Petes improve to 17-21-0-4, while the Battalion fall to 20-17-4-1.

No. 3 star: Yan Pavel Laplante & Angelo Miceli, Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL)

Laplante and Miceli had the best nights of a host of Tigres who demolished Cape Breton 12-3.

Laplante scored a natural hat-trick in the first period on his way to four goals and two helpers, while Miceli scored once and added five assists.

Jean-François Plante had a goal and four assists, while three players: Jan Mandat, Carl Marois and Gabriel Gagné each had two goals and an assist.

Victoriaville had a 6-1 lead after one period, and 8-3 after two.

François Tremblay, taking over the starting job after a scary injury to Brandon Whitney in practice on Jan. 6, made 30 saves for win, while Zachary Fortin let in the first 10 goals and was tagged for the loss. Victoriaville improved to 18-19-4-2, while Cape Breton dropped to 22-18-0-3.

Honourable mention: Roberts Lipsbergs, Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)

Lipsbergs was in on every T-Birds goal, scoring twice and assisting two more as Seattle beat visiting Spokane in overtime 4-3.

He created some late-game heroics, scoring the game’s tying goal at 17:46, and then setting up Alexander Delnov for his second goal of the night on the overtime winner.

The win moved Seattle into a three-way tie with the Chiefs and Everett at 55 points apiece. The T-Birds moved to 25-14-2-3, while Spokane fell to 26-13-1-2.

Danny Mumaugh stopped 22 shots for the win, while Eric Williams made 29 saves in the loss.
