Desrosiers sets new QMJHL shutout streak in win over Victoriaville: Monday’s 3 stars
No. 1 star: Philippe Desrosiers, Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL)
Desrosiers has had an unbeatable month of February, literally.
He pitched his second shutout in a row in a 5-0 win over Victoriaville, setting a new QMJHL shutout streak of 213 minutes and 15 seconds, beating the previous record set earlier this season by Quebec netminder François Brassard, who had a 212-minute streak.
Desrosiers last allowed a goal in a game on Feb. 7 against Saint John. He’s had three shutouts and a spotless relief appearance since then.
He also is undefeated in February, posting a win in every appearance so far. He is on a five-game winning streak.
Desrosiers stopped 31 pucks for the shutout on Monday. Patrik Zdrahal had a goal and two assists to secure the victory.
Rimouski jumped to 34-15-3-4 on the season, enough to tie them for fourth place in the QMJHL with Quebec. Victoriaville dropped to 29-21-4-2.
No. 2 star: Travis Sanheim, Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
Sanheim had five assists in Calgary’s 7-1 thrashing of the Red Deer Rebels.
The Hitmen rookie exploded this weekend, as the five assists gave him nine in the last three games. The blueliner, a ninth round pick in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft, now has 25 points on the year, enough to put him in a tie for 19th in WHL rookie scoring.
Adam Tambellini had another great game, with a goal and three assist, and his linemate, Brady Brassart had a hat trick for the Hitmen. Joe Mahon scored twice, while Greg Chase had a goal and two assists.
Mack Shields stopped 39 shots for the win in goal, while Patrik Bartosak took the loss in nearly a full game’s work, steering aside 29 shots.
With the win, Calgary improved to 39-15-3-3, but no playoff spot secured yet. Red Deer dropped to 28-28-1-3.
No. 3 star: Sam Bennett, Kingston Frontenacs (OHL)
North America’s top ranked skater, according to Central Scouting, heading into the 2014 NHL Entry Draft scored three times in Kingston’s 6-4 win over Belleville.
Three goals gives Bennett 32 on the year, and good enough for 82 points. He opened the scoring for the Fronts just 1:39 into the first period with an unassisted effort, and then scored twice in the second for good measure.
Four Fronts had two helpers in the game: Even McEneny, Michael Moffat, Roland McKeown and Corey Pawley. Matt Mahalak got the win in goal, making 28 saves, as Kingston improved to 31-20-2-2 on the year.
Cameron Brace assisted on all four Bulls goals, but it wasn’t enough on Monday. Remi Elie scored twice for Belleville, who dropped to 17-34-3-2.
Honourable mention: The Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL)
The Oil Kings came to play on Monday, welcoming the lowly Lethbridge Hurricanes to the slaughter at Rexall Place and didn’t disappoint in a 12-0 whitewashing of the road team.
Mitch Moroz led the team with two goals and three assists, while Henrik Samuelsson had two and two. Reid Petryk had a goal and four assists, while Curtis Lazar and Brett Pollock each scored twice and added an assist, for good measure. Tristan Jarry stopped 25 shots for the shutout.
The damage was split nearly entirely down the middle, as each Hurricane goaltender game up six goals in roughly 30 minutes each. Teagan Sacher started and gave up six on 20 shots in 30:54, while Jonny Hogue gave up six on 33 shots in the latter half.
Edmonton improved to 41-14-1-1, tops in the Eastern Conference, while Lethbridge droped to a conference-low 12-44-2-3.
Notables: Robby Fabbri scored twice, while Zac Leslie and Scott Kosmachuk had a goal and two assists as Guelph dominated Plymouth 9-3. Nick Ebert had three helpers. … Four players had two goals in Owen Sound’s 5-4 win over Ottawa: Holden Cook and Kyle Platzer for the Attack, and Erik Bradford and Connor Brown of the 67’s. … Brayden Point had helpers on all three Moose Jaw goals, but it wasn’t enough as they fell in a shootout to Victoria 4-3. … Nicholas Baptiste had two goals and an assist as Sudbury defeated Mississauga 4-1. Radek Faksa had a goal and two assists for the Wolves. … Dyson Stevenson got two goals and chipped in a helper as Regina shut out Brandon 4-0. Daniel Wapple stopped 23 shots for the goose egg. … Gemel Smith scored twice and added an assist as London doubled Oshawa 6-3. Brett Welychka had a goal and two assists. … Ben Thomson and Mathew Santos each scored twice to lift North Bay to a 6-4 come-from-behind win over Peterborough.
