It's hard to believe it took Connor McDavid almost three seasons to get a hat trick in the OHL, and even harder to believe what he pulled off in the course of doing so on Wednesday.

The surefire first overall pick had a career-high four goals and six points for the Erie Otters on Wednesday, including an end-to-end effort where he made other players on the ice look like they were trudging through two-foot-high snow drifts. McDavid nimbly sliced through three Guelph Storm defenders inside the blueline, then roofed a shot over goalie Justin Nichols.

The goal almost becomes comical thanks to some freeze frame fun. For instance, when McDavid hit the offensive blueline, it looks like Guelph's Noah Carroll, Zac Leslie and Chris Marchese are completely ignoring the possibility of covering McDavid's wingers.

And it still doesn't matter.

And then there's how Nichols was inveigled to slide back toward the left side of the net in anticipation of a backhand deke. Except McDavid somehow went high blocker side from a very acute angle.

The six-point night have McDavid 98 in just 37 games, or 2.65 per contest. That's just slightly off the 2.71 Sidney Crosby averaged with the Rimouski Oceanic 10 seasons ago, in a league that wasn't nearly as deep in NHL first- and second-round picks.

Meantime, London Knights forward Mitchell Marner's 12-point lead over McDavid for the OHL scoring lead doesn't look so safe, even though Erie has only 12 games left.
