No. 1 star: Connor McDavid, Erie Otters (OHL)

For the third time in 12 days, McDavid had a five-point game, so it seems right to grant a one-time waiver  exempting him from Three Stars consideration, just to make it fair for the rest of the Canadian Hockey League.

McDavid (2G-3A, +1) had three points before the opposition even recorded its first shot on goal during Erie's 10-5 win against the Barrie Colts. The top NHL draft prospect opened the scoring with a rebound goal 1:15 into the proceedings, then set up goals 76 seconds apart by Kyle Maksimovich (1G-2A, +2) and Dallas Stars second-rounder Remi Elie (1G-1A, -1).

Erie was ahead just 6-4 entering the third period, but McDavid drew an assist on a redirect goal by Alex DeBrincat 38 seconds into the frame. He stayed out for a 5-on-5 shift and scored a backhand goal on a well-timed break to the net for a DeBrincat pass, and the rout was on.

No. 2 star: Nikolaj Ehlers, Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)

If McDavid is un-shunned, then it's only fair to extend it to Ehlers (1G-4A, +3) after the Winnipeg Jets top pick had a five-spot of his own during a 7-4 Halifax home win against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.

The Mooseheads, who are actually among the lower-scoring teams in the Quebec League, trailed three times as the Titan got a big night from overage Andrew Ryan (1G-3A, +2), who was part of Halifax's Memorial Cup team two seasons ago. Ehlers had two power-play assists during the second period to bring the Mooseheads within a goal entering the final 20. Twenty-three seconds after the Mooseheads levelled at 4-4, the Dashing Dane assisted on rookie Samuel Hunter's first major junior goal to put Halifax ahead to stay.

Ehlers pounced after a defensive breakdown to give the Mooseheads a two-goal cushion with 11:50 left, then wrapped up the night with another assist.

No. 3 star: Ty Edmonds, Prince George Cougars (WHL)

Edmonds came up big with 34 saves to help Prince George score a 3-2 upset win against the Calgary Hitmen, who merely came in with 13 wins in their last 15 road games. The 18-year-old Winnipegger stoned Adam Tambellini twice on a pair of early third-period short-handed chances shortly after the Cougars had taken the lead, then made a stick save to deny Connor Rankin. Edmonds and his teammates had to dig deep to grind out the win, weathering a Hitmen power play in the final two minutes.

Honourable mention: Wyatt Johnson, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)

Johnson (1G-2A, +1) earned first-star honours inside the building during Red Deer's 6-2 road win against the Swift Current Broncos. The Rebels' interim captain broke away for a short-handed goal 3:15 into the second that opened a 3-1 advantage. Minutes later, Johnson and Brooks Maxwell (1G-3A, +1) assisted on successive power-play salvos by Presten Kopeck (2G).

Potent notables — Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Brayden Point (1G-1A, +2) and Zach Sawchenko (33 saves) led Moose Jaw to a 3-0 win over Medicine Hat ... Captain Peter Quenneville (3G-1A, +1) paced Brandon to a 7-3 win against Lethbridge, as the Wheat Kings clinched the Eastern Conference title ... In the OHL, Calgary Flames first-rounder Sam Bennett (2G) led Kingston to a 4-1 win against Mississauga ... San Jose Sharks prospect Kevin Labanc recorded his 99th point during the Barrie-Erie game ... In the QMJHL, Daniel Sprong (1G-1A, +1) and Filip Chlapik (1G-1A, +1) led Charlottetown to a 3-2 win against Cape Breton .... Edmonton Oilers-drafted goalie Keven Bouchard (34 saves) helped Val-d'Or win its 10th consecutive game, 4-2 at Gatineau ... Michael Joly (2G-1A, +2) led Rimouski to a 6-0 win over Sherbrooke, as the Océanic moved ahead of idle Blainville-Boisbriand and Moncton into first overall.
